It's Wicket! Wicket the ewok! Wicket W. Warrick! And what does Wicket's middle initial stand for? I just Googled it and, for some reason, his middle name is Wystri. * sigh * Well, I guess that's what one gets when they allow nerds to come up with a name for a sci-fi character.

Why Ewoks? Because George's original primitive race to defeat the Empire were the Wookies. But Chewie blew that. So Instead of giant walking carpets George went with teddy bears, flipped the sound of the race's name, and Voila!
