Finally got around to finish coloring my speculative piece for Shin-Gojira. It's a bit far from what we're getting, but I still had fun doing this design. :)
-Not necessarily the design itself, but I only referenced the Shodai-Goji (1954) for ideas, particularly that unsettling, downward-facing line of sight. To make it feel more piercing, I took some inspiration from the Skeksis from THE DARK CRYSTAL. Overall, I wanted to kinda make him look really shook up, sporting the mother of all 1000-mile stares, with a slight hint of anger as to why this happened to him.
-It’s not so much that I did away with his “cat” ears, they’ve been burned away and sealed shut; the atomic bomb has literally left Godzilla deaf. I can also imagine that, because he can’t hear, his iconic roar is not his natural voice; he tries to bellow louder, but still can’t hear anything, unaware of the blood-curdling howl that he’s actually producing.
-His fins aren’t jagged - they’ve been shredded. Broken. I find Godzilla’s most defining feature to be his fins; the most ornamental garb of His Majesty the King has been reduced to little more than frayed, dirty rags. Ironically, they mimic the fires that burned through him…and he carries that fire on his back and shoulders.
Again, not what we're getting, but this was still fun to do.
Godzilla (C) Toho
*Oh yeah, I mentioned on my Powered Baltan that I was testing out a new coloring technique on a piece - this is the one. ;)
