I've been where Adam is. I have that gift for some things as well (including the math.) But when he hits the limit of his native instincts, it'll clobber him. He'll have to learn to study on the fly. At that point, Chucky can return the favor and help him learn how to learn the hard way. A year or two or three down the road, most likely, but it most likely will happen if he isn't in the High Genius levels.
I have a friend whose parents both have multiple phds in physics and such. He and his brother build three dimensional mazes out of legos and mail them to each other. You put the BB in one hole, then rotate and listen repeat until you get the BB out the other hole. Opening it up is admitting defeat. Oy.
