Took this pictures at our annual "Perchtenlauf" in our small Austrian Village.
So...you see. We have Krampus. But he is only a small part of our tradition! Krampus goes along with St.Nicolaus and punishes the naughty children or gives them coal & potatoes instead of presents, or beat them up and take them with him in his basket. But we also have "Perchten" who are like a pack of Krampus that runs through the village to clean out the evil winter-spirits (and if you stupid enough to go outside during that time, they might snatch you up as well~)
And so, we have this tradition of Perchten/Krampus parades. Fireshows, loud metal music, hot punch and Krampus fighting other Krampus and scaring the audience XD It's a lot of fun! Sadly I'm not a good photographer, but i tried to catch some impressions for you.
And yes, they also come at you and hit you with rods if you are not a nice "child" (they don't care if you are all grown up) and behave XD But...as a kid it's the most fun to tease the Krampus so he runs after you. OF COURSE.
Also, each of this costumes is unique and belongs to the owner alone. The costumes can cost as much as 2000€ and each mask is handmade out of wood (usually) and they use real animal material for it (this is the tradition, but sometimes they also make they horns out of other materials, specially because they are fucking heavy)
Important for a proper Krampus are the HUGE bells, chains and shaggy fur, besides the majestic horns of course. There are also Lady-Krampus around, who look like old witches.
At the parades, there is also a St.Nicolaus who children can go to and get a small present (Nuts, Oranges and Candy) but I didn't took any pictures of that because who cares.
And YES, I saw the Krampus Movie that is in the cinemas right now.
It's...ok i guess. But doesn't catch the spririt right.
KRAMPUS IS NOT AN ANTI-SANTA CLAUS!
Also...what the fuck is up with the posessed toys in that movie? And the gingerbread-men...? Uhm. No.

Halloween is drastically different from this, though. It's mostly just taking kids around dressed as whatever they want so their neighbors can give them candy. There might be some Samhain parties, but they are incredibly rare. For those of us that really love old school halloween, the horror motifs, the bonfires and such, this looks like so much fun. Americans just don't have any good holidays, all the ritual and tradition has been replaced with commercialism and consumerism.

Yes, that's a thing here too. That's why I only go to organized Perchten-Parades like this nowadays. Because these are from groups that know what they are doing and don't hurt anybody. But at "Krampus-Rummel" everybody can put on a mask and be Krampus...and sometimes you get some stupid assholes who use that as an excuse to beat up people.
But i have to admit...it got better over the years. People don't tolerate that anymore and the police is pretty quick with those idiots.

Those are Bells ;>
They can have different forms, round http://www.ritsch.at/typo3temp/pics.....989543ecd1.jpg or like cow bells http://www.schlossnerhof.at/img/upl....._-_3_klein.jpg Some carry them on the side and have the baskets on their backs. All different~
But yeah, i love how some of them look like metal-butts. I think that's intentional ;D

My roommates and I are going to go see Krampus today. I'm sad to hear that it's gotten luke warm reviews and doesn't do justice to Krampus, but I'm still happy to see that we are finally getting a movie for krampus. Very few people even know about it in America, so it's nice to see a Christmas horror movie that's different and tackling something like this.
Yeah. I was very excited for that because my Austrian friend told me about the Krampus like a couple months before I heard about that movie... My mom was so excited about it because she loves scaring kids, she almost wanted to go to Austria this year and buy an outfit. xD
But during the snowstorm when you first see the Krampus I was like "OMG this movie might actually be good!..."
And then there was the gingerbread man and I was like "Oh damn, I think this movie's gonna suck now... ._. "
And then 90% of the movie was about the helpers and not the Krampus himself. And I was super disappointed. His mask wasn't even as scary as some of the ones you see at Krampuslauf...
If it kept the vibe that the first scene that showed him had, I think it would have been pretty great. :|

I wouldn't take the movie too personally, it was inspired by old traditions then bastardized with additions believed would appeal to the crowd.
indeed a very interesting aspect of the holidays and interesting traditions and mythical figures. I'm glad you shared this, I'm very interested in learning about new stuff, especially other holiday traditions aside from the more popular ones in the states :3

The movie... well... it was ok... I didnt think it was a waste of money at least...
I did enjoy the beginning... the scenes with the krampus, the krampus design, the snowstorm scenes and I thought Aunt Berta or whatever her name was here, was pretty funny. And I also did like the ending quite a bit. Also the fact that it was rather unbloody and that Krampus was just taking the people and not really killing them. Thought that was rather accurate.
And then there were these toy scenes... I guess they should have been the funny part, because it was a horror comedy movie but I found everything about it annoying and not in the slightest scary and even less funny, not even the jackinthebox predator thingie....
On another note... thought Krampus was known in Germany as well and not only in Austria. But I guess hes just known in some regions like Bayern...
I think the Krampus legend is pretty cool... It actually seems, Christians did take a lot of the pagan festivities and turned them into their own....

Now you say it...yeah. I think the only REALLY bad part are these toy-monsters and that horrible gingerbreadmen CGI szenes (i wish they just left them unanimated, that szene where the 'fish' the fat kid was AWESOME when it wasn't animated. Would have been so creepy if they never showed them move). And it was so annoying that it went ooon and oooon. It felt very much like Gremlins or something like that (just...not funny)
But the rest was ok more or less. It's an american movie so it was obvious they would mix it with Santa Claus etc. I can live with that.
Just that STUPID GINGERBREAD MAN OMFG i HATE THOSE SO MUCH D:<

Perchten is the more traditional mountain demon. They can have all fur colors, but the face is usually red and they have 4 horns.
They also have females, that look almost the same, but smaller.
Krampus is christianity mixed with this old figure and made it look more like the devil. It's complicated ^^;
I love that they have red and blue faces :) It's still so original and not mixed up with other cultures <3
