Okay, so I promised I would actually try to draw stuff and upload things more - so here's the first such attempt. While at CAThulu's tonight, I was trying to work on a pic of Sera I've been toying with a while. I think I've redrawn her paws like 40 times. XD I was trying to come up with a guide that works well for C3 type footpaws and I think I've done something that sorta works. (C3 as per the classification system in the paw-posts here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/7014996/ )
Looking at the sole head-on, if you start with four circles that define the pawpad or ball of the foot, the rest seems to work out in slight changes from that size. The toes are 20% smaller (if using four toes), the mid-sole is 20% larger, and the heel area is 40% larger than the pad circles. The ouside of the heel lines up with the outside of the pad. And trust me - CAThulu was nice enough to provide her sole for me to verify that fact. :P Now... of course this can totally vary, but as a base guide, a little scaling makes this work well for a lot of C3 types (at least for me... who really sucks at drawing). XD
The Footpaw on the right is a quick attempt to rough-in lines around that guide. Was not using the pressure sensitive tablet for this one (well... it is, but only in Windows, which I don't use). So there you go - I actually drew something. :P Perhaps others might find it a useful starting point too. ^_^ And thank you to Cat for her awesome encouragement and perfect feet for reference. *laughs*

Well thank-ya! Coming from you, that is a real compliment. ^_^ My biggest issue with drawing digitally is that i just cannot do a smooth line with a tablet to save my life. Even with drag, smoothing and so on options. XD Still, was a fun experiment to see if there's a golden sorta ratio at work.
Aw shucks X3 and have you tried using the stabilizer? SAI gets cranky about tablet drivers, especially pressure sensitivity >.< but if you set the stabilizer to S-7 it helps a TON. You'll honestly wonder how you ever got by without it.
I remember seeing
blotch did this canine paw tutorial a while ago: http://41.media.tumblr.com/97b10b15.....1gamo1_500.jpg The pentagon shape really works! I've been using that and people are all saying I've improved ^^ just keep in mind a feline paw would be shorter and rounder than a canine, with a wider heel and (obv) retractable claws and you can even do distinctive paw shapes for different species rather than a generic look. : D

Yeah - I remember (and have) that guide from Blotch; works well for a feral digitigrade paw, but not as much for an anthro C4. Each paw-type requires a big different proportions and layouts because the two placement shifts depending on how the creature walks.
As for Sai - yeah, I know everyone uses it but I can't because it only runs on Windows, and I don't use Windows unless I'm forced to. XD Awful OS. I have two tablets - an old huge Intuos2 and a newer ToYaa, the ToYaa was a gift from friends and is designed more for full-screen modern computers, BUT, the company doesn't open-source their drivers, so it only works with pressure sensitivity in Windows. I only fire up Windows to play games that don't work on WINE. Either way though the problem is less the tablet and more my ability to digitally draw with one. :P

*nodsnods* Perhaps. The 4 circles change size with the toes really. If you have a "big" toe as the inner toe and little toe on the end, than the circle where the ball joint is would be larger along with that toe. I think.... *Ponders* Hmm... so many interesting ways it can be varied, eh?
