Here is my part in a trade with
. I was asked to write a scene involving Aaron, Azar, and Callum in some sort of training together.
Aaron is the far older and far more skilled of the three, so naturally it would only be fair if Callum and Azar were facing off against him together.
This is the first time I've tried writing a more drawn-out "fight" scene, so critique is appreciated! I have to say it's a lot harder to write fight scenes than to do them for video (at least in my experience). It gets tough to describe how things and characters are moving and interacting, while still trying to give the fight a sense of speed. I may have to practice writing them a bit more.

It was a beautiful day over the grand city of St. Heimself. A sunny, near cloudless day keeping everyone warm and comfortable. Perfect weather for many of the city’s residents to find a reason to be outside. Whether it was shopping, merchants working to get extra sales, or entertainers putting on their best display.
But for a select group of individuals, today was perfect for something else. For training.
Just outside the city was the open training ground of the Dragon Knights. There were multiple other trainees out on the field, both dragon and non-dragon alike. Including a white, almost pearlescent, dragon named Azarosna and a metallic gray and blue dragon named Callum. The two were training together, with Azar allowing Callum to make the first move of their “fight”, dodging just out of the way of Callum’s powerful swing of his claws or tail.
“Good! You’re finally picking up speed to work with all that strength!” Azar said, a pleased smile on his face. Callum, however, was panting. The gray dragon wasn’t used to this much training at one time, at least not in many years, and Azar had been keeping them at it since the day began.
“Yeah, but I still can only get in one hit in the time it takes you or anyone else to get in three or four,” Callum said as he sat down with a heavy “thump.”
“True, but think of it this way Callum. You only need one hit with all the strength you’ve got behind your attacks,” Azar said with a nod, sitting down a bit more gently.
As Azar talked with Callum a bit more about tips he could use to tweak his fighting technique, neither dragon was aware that they were being watched. Two pairs of eyes and one larger eye had been keeping tabs on the two dragons all day. or at least, ever since they had reached the training field. Now that the two were on a break, the watcher’s mind on what to do next had finally been made up. He slithered out as quickly as he could to greet them.
Azar was still in the middle of explaining to Callum the finer points of why trying to suplex a dragon didn’t really work, when a violet blur flashed by the both of them. “Did you see that?” he asked Callum. The gray dragon nodded before both drakes came to the same conclusion at the same time.
“Hey guys!” an excited voice called out to both of them. Azar and Callum looked to their right and saw the familiar violet, serpent-shaped, five-eyed spirit floating about in the air near them. “Fancy seeing you two here!” he said, practically bouncing in the air with excitement. Immediately, both dragons knew something was up. Aaron was a very fun spirit to be around, but his tells when he had something on his mind or was planning something was rather telling.
“Fancy seeing us here? Aaron… this training field is near my home. This is my home city,” Azar stated, an air of suspicion in his voice. “I think it’s more interesting that you’re here. It’s not always easy for you to get to St. Heimself,” he said with a bit of a smile on his face.
“Yeah, care to tell us why spirit of mortality is out here to see us?” Callum asked.
“Awww, can’t I just pop in to come see friends now and again?” Aaron asked, giving a mock look of being hurt by the dragons’ inquiries.
“You’re less bouncy in the air when you come to see us for a normal visit,” Callum pointed out.
Aaron rolled his eyes. “Oh, alright, you got me. I did come here to find you two. Been watching you most of the day actually.”
“But why? You know you can just come say hello whenever,” Azar said, still looking a bit suspicious. This certainly wasn’t normal behavior, even for the eccentric spirit. Azar could only assume something was up.
“Well if I just came and said hello you two would have been distracted hanging with me all day. I wanted to stay quiet and watch you two spar,” Aaron said before floating down to the ground and coiling up in the grass. “I was thinking about it, and I realized that I’ve never seen you two spar before. Or at least, not in long periods of time. And then I started to wonder what your fighting skills might be like firsthand,” he said. Azar’s eyes started to widen as he realized what Aaron might be alluding to. “To put it simply my friends, I wish to spar with you. Both of you against me.”
“Spar with us. But… can you even spar?” Callum asked, already getting up on all fours once again. Azar was happy to see that the gray dragon was very quick to recover, even after spending most of the day already sparing. Callum looked as eager to know more about Aaron’s proposal as he did confused at it.
“Callum, I’m a thousand-year old spirit. Do you think I’ve existed all that time and never had to defend myself or others? Not every situation can be solved with magic, so sometimes a more physical approach is needed,” he said, looking at Callum more seriously. “You two are practically still children when compared to my age, so trust me when I say I know a thing or two about fighting. And it’s been ages since I’ve been able to actually spar, and you two are quite skilled yourselves. I need the challenge, and you two together are the perfect one” he added, giving them both a wide grin.
Azar looked to Callum before giving a shrug. “I don’t see why not,” he said, Callum nodding in agreement.
“Perfect! But first, I need to make it more fair for me,” Aaron said gleefully before he froze up. Four of his five eyes closed for a moment as he concentrated. Before both dragons’ eyes, Aaron’s body grew in height and length, going from about six feet to 30 feet long. His upper body started to change as well, shifting to gain more of a regular torso. A pair of arms grew out from his new shoulders, turning Aaron from just a serpent into more of a naga. “Ah, there we go. This should make it a little more fair on size. Now, for the second part of being fair, I promise not to use any magic. Only what physical combat skills I have,” he said, giving a nod to both dragons.
Azar and Callum returned the nod in full. “No claws or horns. Tails, paws, feet, and hands all allowed. Only soft bites allowed,” Azar said to set down the ground rules.
“I want you two both to give it your all against me. Don’t worry about harming me. I’m still a spirit in body remember? And I promise you two won’t be harmed either, even if I have to toss you around a bit,” Aaron said with a chuckle before getting ready. He put both arms up before laying his hands out flat, palms facing upwards. One arm was closer to his body while the other was more outstretched. “Ready,” he told his two opponents.
None of the three combatants moved once the signal to begin had been given by Aaron. Everything else around them seemed to melt away until the only thing they could see and hear was each other. Azar always hated the silence and tension right before a fight, even if it was just a sparring match. While they were just going to be testing each other’s skills, Azar didn’t quite like the idea of potentially being bested, even by a friend. Unfortunately, he had no idea what Aaron’s skills in hand to hand combat were. What’s worse, the look of confidence on the serpent’s face made Azar even more uneasy.
Just have to go with what I know, the dragon through to himself. Then, taking one more breath, Azar made the first move.
Azar moved forward and lunged at Aaron as fast as he could, jaws snapping down at one of Aaron’s arms. Moving as fast as his serpentine form would suggest, Aaron quickly dodged to the side and jabbed his arm forward to tap Azar on the neck. The white dragon let out a growl at letting himself be tagged so easily. “Got you,” Aaron said with a chuckle, which only made Azar smile and go for another strike.
This time his tail whipped around to catch Aaron on his side. But the sly serpent leaned back just in time and far enough so that the tail wooshed right over him. The spirit was about to make another teasing remark at how easily he dodged the attack when he caught a fast-approaching gray figure coming right at him!
Callum knew Azar would make the first move, and so he had waited for just the right moment to take a charge at Aaron. The gray dragon was bulkier and a bit slower than Azar, who certainly favored the agile side of combat. But what he lacked in speed and maneuverability, he made up in sheer strength. While Aaron was busy dodging Azar’s tail, Callum made to tackle the spirit.
But Aaron caught on to the trap faster than either dragon would have expected. Twisting his body, Aaron made just enough space for Callum to merely graze along his scales as he passed, before striking out and tapping Callum on the back.
Callum managed to skid himself to a halt just in time that he didn’t overshoot his opponent. He turned and went to clamp his maw down on Aaron’s striking arm. At the same time, Azar was going in to get a strike on Aaron’s chest. The serpent realized that despite his extensive skill at hand-to-hand combat, he didn’t want to get caught in between both dragons. Both dragons caught nothing but air as Aaron quickly slithered out of the way, turning around and readying himself for another attack.
Callum and Azar were both smiling despite their failed attempt to best Aaron. It seemed they were getting as much fun out of having a challenge as Aaron was. Callum lead the charge this time, leaping at Aaron. The violet spirit serpent dodged to the right, but had to duck at the last second to avoid getting struck on the head by Azar, who had taken to the air and was trying to get at Aaron from above while Callum handled the ground.
Callum now took heavy swings with his front paws at Aaron, the serpent bobbing and weaving to avoid them. This time though, when he tried to counter by striking back along Callum’s shoulders, Aaron’s eyes widened as the gray dragon merely deflected them using his wings. “You’ve been learning a lot from Azar haven’t you?” Aaron said before suddenly ducking low and slithering under Callum to avoid another air attack by Azar.
Aaron came back up on the other side of Callum, right by his tail. He gave one quick wave and a smile to Callum before sweeping his long tail to trip the gray dragon onto his side. Callum gave a grunt as he fell to the ground with a heavy thump. Aaron moved in to get a few extra strikes in and maybe even force Callum to submit, but he was interrupted when he felt a paw on his tail.
Azar hand landed while Aaron was busy fighting Callum, and now the white dragon managed to get his first strike in against the serpent. “Got you,” he said with a grin.
Aaron quickly withdrew his tail and dashed forward at Azar. He was little more than a violet blur, and he closed in to get multiple hits on Azar’s chest. But before the first strike could hit, Aaron found it parried by the white dragon’s paw. Azar was a bit faster than the spirit had initially thought. The two had a brief exchange of hand to paw strikes, both deflecting each other before Aaron had to duck to avoid Azar’s left wing that swung at him, the dragon turning his body with the attack to try tail whipping Aaron again. Once more Aaron lowered himself to avoid the swinging tail. But Azar used his momentum with the tail swing to whip around and swing a paw at Aaron while the serpent was still getting back up.
Aaron let out a grunt as he was struck in the side rather hard, stumbling back a bit. He wasn’t given much time to think, as Callum was back on his feet and was going for another charge. With a grin Aaron waited for the last possible second of Callum’s charge before turning himself around and grabbing Callum’s left arm. The gray dragon’s eyes widened with both surprise and confusion at what Aaron was doing
With a combination of both Callum’s momentum and his own strength, Aaron dodged Callum’s charge and swung him around by his arm to throw him at Azar. Callum let out a drawn out yelp as he went flying through the air towards Azar. When the two collided, Aaron was sure it would leave them both dazed enough that the spirit could claim victory.
Time felt like it slowed for both Azar and Aaron as Callum was sailing through the air. Acting on both instinct and using what training he knew, Azar reared back and launched himself into the air, right at Callum. Tucking in his arms as he he came up and extending his wings out, Azar managed to leap himself right over Callum. But at the apex of the jump, Azar pushed his arms and legs down to launch himself off Callum and right at Aaron.
It all happened so fast that Aaron wasn’t prepared for a counter. Azar tackled into Aaron right as Callum landed into the grass behind them both. The spirit managed to keep his wits about him as he fell back onto the grass, using a similar trick as he did with Callum to use Azar’s continuing momentum to push the white dragon off him. Azar landed just a few feet behind where Aaron’s head now laid in the grass.
Aaron quickly got back to his feet and coiled himself up to react again from another duel strike against him. Callum was already up on his feet and waiting for Azar’s move so he could respond. But right as the white dragon started to move forward, Aaron’s voice called out to them both.
“That’s enough!” he said, dropping his arms to his sides. “I think I experienced what I needed to for now,” he said. While both dragons were still tense and ready to go, Aaron had immediately dropped back to his calm demeanor.
“But… who won?” Callum asked.
“Does it matter? No one tapped out, no one surrendered, and no one was knocked out. I think I’d like to say this was a tie,” Aaron told the gray drake as he started brushing himself off. “You two are working very well together. Keep at it and you two could make a fierce team.”
Azar took a deep breath and started to calm himself from the sparring match, but eyed Aaron carefully. The spirit may have called it a tie, but the white dragon wasn’t so sure. Aaron hadn’t looked troubled during the entire fight, even when both dragons got a surprise or two in. He could only assume their friend had held back the whole time.
“So what now?” Azar asked.
“I think I’m going to go take a tour around the city again. You two are welcome to come along or stay here and keep up the training. You might need it next time we spar,” he said as he shifted back to his much smaller, purely serpent form. He flashed the two a mischievous smile before slithering through the air back towards St. Heimself.
The two dragons looked to one another, before both gave a shrug and started to follow. They’d never quite understand Aaron’s motivations, but they could never deny he made things interesting every time he showed up.
