Taking a break from his feathery characters, this time a bust commission for :linkVangarthia of his dragon Narissilyn, who's looking rather saucy if I do say so myself :V I've never felt comfortable doing scales or metallic dragons, so I took the opportunity to see what I could do if I really, really tried :b Gotta say, I'm pretty happy with how she turned out :) Turns out, the trick to really nice looking scales is to just stop trying to cut corners XD

Adobe Photoshop CS5 - I'd say how long it took, but I don't want Vangarthia to know, haha. Longer than it was supposed to :b

Me too! XD And it was my pleasure, really. You do gorgeous work and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to babble constantly about my characters while you worked on her. :p I also love it when I leave a word out of a comment I post so its always gonna be there forever for folks to read and notice. Ha!
Thanks!
First of all, I drew in a big blob to be the see-through mesh bit - I used a textured brush, 'cause real lace isn't usually quite sheer.
Second, I drew the outline of the panty/bra shapes on a new layer on top of the "mesh" one. Then I started drawing in some loopy/flowery patterns like they tend to put on lacey things - this was the most time-consuming part.
Thirdly, I erased the mesh bits that were "sticking out" from under the outline layer. I also applied a slight "bevel/emboss/texture" effect to the outline layer as a quick/easy way to give it depth and texture, since lace tends to have a slightly bumply texture to it.
Fourth, I masked/locked the final design for the lace and mesh, then coloured over it again, applying slight shadows/light areas to match the body, so it's not entirely flat white.
Fifth, I added a tiny bit of shadow beneath the outlines where it sits on top of her skin (it's most visible on the panty strap on her hip).
Hope that helps! I used Photoshop, but most of what I did with the exception of maybe the bevel/emboss/texture effect should be entirely doable in other programs :)

Oh my 0_o that is quite the looking she has there rarely do I like to express a direct opinion, other than stating the aspects, but Hot Damn! You not cutting corners is the singe best thing you could have done (and did) to make her look as good as she does. Please in the future when drawing reptilians do the same for high end commissions such as this.
Heh, thank you <3 I usually feel pressured for time, is the problem - I don't get paid by the hour, but rather estimate how long something might take me, and doing scales for not even a full-body image took me an extra 6 hours XD It wasn't a problem doing it for Vangarthia, because he's always been a generous and consistent client, but a lot of people don't like paying over $100 for a picture, let alone +$150 just for scalework :( That's why I'm always sorta trying to find ways to do shortcuts >_>
All the same even in paying generously it was all worth it, as the image itself had me doing a doubletake at all the details besides the scales, but that lace too. Ok it is by the hour well still awesome, even if fine detail like this image will only be done on rare occasion.
Heh, as a biology graduate, I understand the problems you're referring to with the kind of sexual anthropomorphizing that tends to be done to non-mammalian species... but as an artist and fantasy buff, some part of me is just like, "Meh! I think I'm okay with it :V" - anyway, haha, glad you get something out of it, at least! Thanks ;)
A little on the high side considering how much I normally pay for commissioned art, however, I normally work with undiscovered talent and in this gallery quality speaks for itself! Are you open for commissions all the time or do you advertise them in journals or on a patreon or something? I'm all paid out for this month but in the future I may be very interested in commissioning a piece of art like this through you. It's brilliant in its execution
I realize BOTH that it's a 5 year old comment, AND that your commission journal hasn't been updated for three years. But...still cannot blame a fan for trying. Any chance a commission slot in similar motif to this might be available soon? Times might have changed a little, but the beauty I see in this piece, and how much I would like to have one of my own; hasn't waned. Reply at your leisure, even if you say that you are not available; I will understand and take the news in stride.
