Endless Realms bestiary - Heremite
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Dies irae, dies illa
solvet saeclum in favilla,
quantus tremor est futurus
quando Judex est venturus...
That day of wrath, the day
that will dissolve the world in ashes,
what terror there will be
when the Judge will come...
The last of the angel concepts I was tasked with coming up with this block - this time, I borrowed from classic Judaism and combined the concept of cherem, righteous destruction, with the cherubim, four-headed angels with two sets of wings - one set of wings was always folded over their body, lest their immense and holy grandeur entirely overwhelm mortal onlookers.

That's the origin of the famous "Dies Irae" motif - you can hear musical allusions to it in some soundtracks as a kind of foreboding :b
Here's one song based entirely around that repeating tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RirEqehfsg
You can also hear it in the Sweeney Todd soundtrack (1:45): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8MXcP5BMNg

Thank you very much!
Heh, I actually don't know - since they are probably going to be used in-game for combative purposes, perhaps revealing themselves would release too much energy and would be used as a last resort massive attack, or yes, perhaps it's out of consideration for their fellow allies that might be sharing the battlefield with them (maybe the big explosion would harm friend as well as foe, so they avoid it if they can).

Haha, cool :) But yeah, I'm afraid all that I have to offer is speculative at best. I usually have input as to how the creatures I create will be used (I mean, I had to think of their physical appearance/design, and part of that is what exactly they do and how) which I offer to the team, but I really don't think they even look at what I say XD They just take the picture and do their own thing with it.
Wow. So I'm perceiving this through the filter of classical studies (mainly Rome) but bulls I think to agricultural societies in general symbolize material wealth. And lions are linked with physical prowess/might. Same with eagles, except over the air. So that's three symbols of power, plus a human. Is this power for the benefit of humans, or exercised by humans?
Thank you kindly, I'm glad you think so! It's a bit tough to do angels that resemble humans juuuuuust enough, but are definitely NOT human - we have a few that appear more-or-less straight-up "people" but those'll probably be the minority.
Haha, for good reason. I'd be a little freaked out if a giant wheel of flaming eyeballs descended from heaven and started talking to me o_o

It's the queen of the chess set xD With those four heads it can easily move in any direction and easily fly over the Aethir Bastion's walls and set its foes on a blaze in holy fire. Or maybe each head has a different personality, and their for if you try to to talk to one it makes things crazier if they don't specifier which head their character speaks to.
Great work as always
