Well... cats and foxes. Same thing, right?
I have a confession to make- I pretty much hate the way I draw faces. Have for quite a while. It's just not working for me... so I'm going to try and do something about it, to the best of my ability. I'm not really sure what exactly I'm going to do yet, since I really have no idea what sort of style I want to aim for in the long run, but I suppose the best first step is simply to study some realism for a while. After all, just about every style has a basis in the real world anyway.
I decided to start with some species I'm more comfortable with, so foxes and cats. I googled a bunch of random pictures and went to work. This is what I came up with... some are pretty awful, but there are also a few I like. I think tomorrow I'll try reptiles and birds, things with head shapes I'm a bit less comfortable with perhaps.
Anyway, have another random practice dooodle.

Foxes in general work pretty good just as they are, it doesn't take much changing to make an appealing anthro out of 'em. The tricky part is when you get to less 'cute' species... You can slap a realistic fox head on a more or less human body and it'll pretty much work. Do the same with a horse head and in my opinion you've created something horrifying. x3 I really struggle to stylize things in a way that makes them look appealing without losing the things that make them what they are, but I'm hoping studying realism will be a good first step toward figuring that out.
Sorry, rambled on a bit there, heh. At any rate, I'm happy you liked my fox doodles! :D Thanks!

I get you completely. Though when making anthros, I don't even try to be appealing, I love monstrous looks! Like in this super old pic I did once: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9995317/ I prioritize "interesting" above "appealing" but then again, interesting might actually be my appealing?!?!! Deep, man!
