been playing a bit of fallout 4 and... I've been less than thrilled at Bethesda's handling of its plot and world.

Yeah but it was incidental to your quest at the time, the only real reason you end up going for said plot in the end is because at the end of it all it's going to affect your original home somehow (Super Mutant global conquest, the literal destruction of the wastes/tribals). 4 has the difference that you are very quickly shoved into a mainstream plot from the beginning.
Though I honestly can't remember what set off 2's plot, 1's had the Water Chip that took up most of the early game.

The better question is..... Does Fallout have a plot? Or is it like a poorly planned porno like the Lemon stealing whores... xD

*dies laughing* holy shit why did I click that XD oh god XD .... porn usually has some of the most asinine plots and acting but oh dear god... did a porno seriously start with a full minute of horribly acted chatter about a lemon tree...... I'm kind of scared to find out how the rest of it goes.....
Fun fact: While Mr. Bone's Wild Ride is the most popular 'never ending roller coaster' built in RCT, It's by no means the longest. It takes about 70 minutes for a full go on MBWR in real time.
Someone made an even longer coaster called The Wheel of Life and Death. This ride takes about 30 hours real time to complete.
The longest ride built in game to date is called Hell Spiral. It takes a whopping 210 REAL LIFE DAYS to complete.
This really doesn't have anything to do with your comment, but fun fact none the less

while I already beat fallout 4 (the brotherhood way) I have found the game is... too. fucking. short.
"so much content! (guns and things)" less then all the older fallouts.
"great graphics!" what? did you reuse the fallout 3 engine and just shine it?
"building!" takes FOREVER!!!
"stuff?" NOT ENOUGH TO BE A FALLOUT GAME!!!
"story..." every person who has ever played a fallout game could have done better.
god there are so many things wrong with fallout 4... sure its a "good" (and I use that loosely) game but damn it sucks compared to fallout 3 and even new vegas!!!

really the only improvement I could really give it is gunplay. it feels a quite a bit less clunky. which lets face it wasn't exactly important in previous fallout games.
and maybe style... I know people have an issue with it but I think it works for making the game survives aging longer.

yeah, i feel that...it was crazily underwhelming, and alot of it was handled incredibly poorly, with a smaller world, and really, less variety almost then fallout 3. fallout 3 you were also central to the plot, but it felt a lot less forced and freeform. new vegas, outside its very short main story, had the best, with the most side content and side plots, and a far more engrossing world and main story. fallout 4 so far has left me very disappointed with my purchase, and hoping that doom 4 will be alot better.
I haven't noticed any railroading. Sure Gogsworth tells you about Concord, and when you get Preston and the Settlers to Sanctuary, Preston tells you about Diamond City.
But after that, I've just been hanging back, building up my network of settlements and collecting any spare Powered Armor I find. Kind of made that Knight's offer feel weak: "You'll even get your own set of power armor." (You mean like the two I have stores at 'Vault 111?' (I only tell people I trust about Sanctuary.))

Personally, I feel that games in the style of Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout NV, and presumably Fallout 4, there should be no "main plot". What happens in the story imo should be based on how you react to the backstory and various happenings in the game. At least that's what I think the point of open world RPGs like those is.
