The Rise of Serpens: Reclamation of New Zealand
by born2beagator and Myrianni
Serpens lay coiled with his mate Tanith in their massive swamp palace in Florida. He flicked his tongue across her scales. “My love, I have found a new way to change humans, one where they will come willingly to me.”
“Have you now my mate.” She replies intrigued by her lover's idea. “Please do tell.”
“I was in Egypt and found something surprising. A young human that still worshipped Sobek, in fact, his parents named him Sobek. He is a crocodile now, but what I discovered is that there are many reptilian deities, all me of course, that humans still revere. And not just deities, mythical creatures, sure to attract explorers. Humans are drawn to these things.” Serpens said.
“So you intend to masquerade yourself in the scales of these deities around the world to attract and turn curious humans.” She says pleased. “Which creature will be first. The Aztec snake god quetzalcoatl, the coming midgaurd serpent, or how about the Australian grand god the Rainbow Serpent.
“Rainbow scales?” Serpens concentrated and colors seemed to explode over him. “How do I look?”
“Amazing my love. Surely this guise shall attract many humans to your grasp.” She hisses in content.
“One is a victory for me Tanith. The world is beginning to change on its own. These personal touches are just for my own enjoyment.” He flicked his tongue across Tanith’s scales and winked out of existence as he teleported.

It has been three long weeks but I have finally arrived here in New Zealand. From what I heard overseas an ancient god apparently lives deep in its jungles and I intend to discover it. After walking off the plane I meet up with a guide I hired to show me this thing’s general direction. He was very hesitant at first but with enough money he brought me to the edge of a road far from the airport. A thick jungle stands before me.
When I asked him what do next he just told me to go forward and never look back. Seeing no other choice I take out my lucky machete and move into the deep jungle. I cut through some vines that are in my way and continue going forward. I see a couple cool animals that I snap pictures of. I soon find myself in a odd clearing where i see a flat plane of land. I begin to move forward stopping as I see an odd structure in the distance.
“Yessss. Come to me….” A hissing voice echoed through the clearing. It seemed to come from the structure, which strangely enough, looked like a Central American Ziggurat.
Intrigued by the voice and the structure i begin to rush towards it. “Who said that!” i screamed at the top of my lungs. i run and run until i make it to the base of the odd structure. “Who on earth built this.” i say after a couple deep breaths.
“Yesssss...come inssside mortal.” The voice egged on. I look for a entrance for the structure. I walk around to the other side and find a carved opening. i ready my machete as I walk in.
Hissing fills the darkened chamber, slithering sounds echo all around. I take out a flashlight and open it looking around every possible corner i can.
The depressions on either side of the walkway are full of snakes of nearly every kind. Strangely some of the snakes seem to be missing some scales, in their place is what looks like patches of human skin.
I take as many pictures that i can of these odd snakes. “What in the hell happened to these poor snakes.”
As I watch the patches of skin scale over.
“They were sssssick.” A deep hissing voice says.d
“Come out. who are you!” I shout back. Like lightning, something flies past me, causing me to lose my balance. “Oh Noo!” I scream as I fall into the pit of snakes.
Surprisingly none bite. Instead they just slither over me as if I were just another snake in the writing mass. “Why are they not biting me?” I ask out loud as I try to make my way out of the pit.
“Ssserpentsss are not ssssavages.” The voice said curtly.
“Who and where are you?!” I call out as I crawl out of the pit of snakes.
A door opens. Inside there seems to be a heat source high above. Snakes are everywhere, there are no walkways here.
“If you wissssh to find out, come to me.” The voice said, clearing coming from a door across the snake filled room.
I walk into the room careful of where I step not wanting to crush any animal in my way. “Why are you hiding behind all of these rooms?” Suddenly I trip over an unseen root, and fall headfirst into a solid mass of serpents.
“Why am I being so clumsy.” I say to myself as I rub my head before slowly making my way back to my feet.
“We never have that isssssue.” The deep voice said, clearly amused.
“That good for you. now please stop hiding.” I respond getting a little annoyed.
The door on the other side of the room opens, but it is across another pit of snakes, clearly poisonous this time. Black Mambas. I walk in cautiously avoiding any aggressive actions towards the snakes. “Nice snakes, good snakes.” I saw as i waddle by them until I get in the center of the room. Suddenly the snakes close, and I slip under the writing mass.
I try to remain calm as I am covered by the slithering reptiles all of which can kill me. I stay still until I think I have a moment to make my way out.
“Do they not feel good?” The voice asks.
“I never said that.” I say as i pick up a snake that caught my eye. I begin to run my hand down its back as I walk to the other side.
“Right. That issssss why you are petting a venomousssss sssnake.” The voice said, amused. Yet there was something different about the voice now. Something...caring?
“N-no. i just like snakes.” I say as I continue to search for the source of the voice. “Stop trying to play mindgames with me and show yourself.
A hissing laugh echos through the chamber. “You like ssssnakes. But you are sssstill petting a black mamba like it’ssss a cat! Not ssssmart wouldn’t you sssay?”
“Stop taunting me already!” i say a little anger growing inside as i keep getting hit with taunts.
“I have been tessssting you. Now one more. I want you to kissss the sssssnake you are holding.”
“W-why would i do that?” i ask shocked as i find myself blushing.
The mamba curls around and looks into your eyes, the inky, alien orbs mesmerizing.
“Becausssse ssssshe issss beautiful isssss ssshe not?”
“Ye- no it’s just a snake.” i reply getting more confused as my face is a brighter red from embarrassment.
She flickers her tongue at you.
“Sssshe iss….how to sssay….sssexy?” The voice asked, amused.
“Yes she is.” i blurt out. I find myself losing control as I kiss her.
“You are perfect…..you belong here….come to me…..” The voice says as a hidden door opens.
I rush to the door as fast as i can. “Who are you?!” I yell as i look around.
An unearthly light fills the room, it's full of snakes. Rainbows seem to dance around the room. The mamba, slithers up around your neck and gently wraps around it.
I try to take the mamba off not trying to get it to bite me as i look for the source of the rainbows.
“Doessss sssshe not feel good around your neck?” A deep voice hisses, clearly from in this room and not in your head anymore. The mamba flicks her tongue against your skin.
“Yes she does.” i say moaning lightly at her touch.
“Then why remove her?”
“She’s venomous.” i reply
“Yet sssshe hasn’t bitten you.” The voice replied
“I’m cautious.” i respond again.
But my concentration is interrupted by the mass of serpents beginning to move. Slowly, a massive snake slithers out of the pile. It is every color of the rainbow, and more worryingly, 50 feet long. The thing could probably swallow me in a bit.
I moved back really quick to avoid getting attacked by this thing. “What the hell is that?!”
“I am the rainbow ssssserpent.” It says, slithering forward.
“Than you are what i came here for. Do you mind if I take a picture?”
“You ssssought me out?” The snake asked, seemingly not surprised.
“Yes I did. just for a simple request.” I answer.
“You find the ssserpentine time form pleassssing?” It asks as I have started rubbing the mamba’s scales.
“What do you mean by that?” I ask confused.
The massive snake brings its head inches from your face. It flicks it’s tongue out, the huge thin organ flicking against your face. Backing up, it continues. “You find our form pleassssing to the eye.” It said again.
“Yes I do. i’m a wildlife photographer.”
“You ssssseem very fond of that sssnake.” It says motioning to the mamba around your neck. “I think sssshe likesss you too.”
“Thats cool. I always thought snakes were cool as a kid.” I respond.
The massive snake’s eyes seem to swirl a bit. “What issss your favorite asssspect of our form?”
“I don’t know where to begin.” I tell the giant snake.
“Sssstart by putting your friend down. Do not worry, ssshe won’t leave.”
I do as the rainbow snake said and i put the snake on the floor. When I look up I find myself staring into the snake’s eyes.
“Now...let usss talk. What isss your favorite part of the ssserpentine form?” It asks, tongue flicking in your face.
“I love the scales.” I respond.
“Indeed? Good choice. In fact...I think you love them more than ssssskin. Don’t you?” The snake asks as it sees a slight discoloration begin to show up under the human’s skin.
“Yes I do.” I say.
“You need to sssshed.” The snake said slyly. “Sssshed that human sssskin, for glorioussss scales.”
“Yes I need to shed my human skin.” I reply dazed.
“Look down….tell me what you sssssee.” The serpent said, motioning to the human’s arms.
I look at my arms shocked at what I’m seeing. “Scales.” I reply.
“But they are trapped under that sssskin.” It says.
Indeed they are. I look down at my arms and see the pattern of black scales under what looks like tan film. “What am I supposed to do to free them?” I ask.
“They will free themsssselvesss in time. They aren’t quite ready yet. But you look more handssssome already don’t you agree my child.” The snake looked to the female mamba who almost seemed to nod.
“Let usss continue.” The snake moved close and nosed my arms. “What are thesssse things.”
“These are my arms. I use them to grab things and use items.” I reply.
The snake makes a flicking motion with its tail. “Usssslesss appendagessss.”
“They aren't useless.” I reply.
The snake brings its head inches from my face. “They are very usssslesss….they jusssst get in the way.”
“The never bothered me.” I respond again trying to defend my arms.
“Sssurely there hasss been a time where they have been injured?” The snake asked.
“Yes but what does that have to do with anything.”
“The point I’m making…” The snake once again looks in my eyes. “Issss you don’t need them. They are an extra appendage to worry about.”
“I-I don't need them.” I repeat.
The snake hisses in a satisfied manner. “Sssshall we get rid of them?”
“Yes we shall.” I find myself blurting out.
“Firsssst...we need to name your friend.” He motioned to the mamba watching you intently. “Isss there anything that ssspeaksss to you?”
“Zafina.” I answer the serpent god.
The snake seemed to chuckle. “You jusssst had to make up a name hard to sssay for our kind. Now...I need you to let Zafina bite you.”
“Why? That could kill me.” I reply.
“No...it will improve you.” The snake said. “Hold out your armssss to her.”
I find myself reluctantly moving my arms in front of Zafina. Like lightning the mamba lashes forward, striking my left and right arm once each. I can feel the venom entering my blood. But then something strange happens. My arms start looking pale.
“No not like this.” I say thinking of the worst outcome. But there is no pain. My arms are completely numb, and they seem to be withering. I feel a strange sucking sensation, and suddenly I’m left with two empty arms. Literally empty. They almost look like plastic bags, hanging uselessly from my shoulders.
“How is this happening?!” I as the serpent god. I am visibly shocked and scared.
“Let me help.” The massive snake gently grips the useless flaps of skin and pulls them away, leaving me with no arms.
“How is this even possible!!” I shout.
“I’m a god?” The snake asks sarcastically.
“I guess you are.” I reply still getting over the shock of losing my arms.
“Now, let usss talk more. I can sssee your ssscaless under that ussseless skin, but they ssstill aren’t quite ready. What iss the next part of ssserpentine anatomy that you adore?” f
“The slim body that is one with the tail.” I answer.
“Yessss….our tail makes up much of our body...therefore yourssss will not grow like mosst reptilessss.” The snake said smugly.
“So how will it grow?” I ask the god.
“Hmmmm...I think I will leave that up to you. We have two choicessss. Zafina can bite your legssss, jussst like ssshe did your arms and your tail will grow from your rear...or I can meld your legssss together.” The serpent said, clearly amused at something.
“I-I want Zafina to do it.” I respond with no other choice at this point.
“Why are you upsssset?” The serpent asked.
“I am going to lose everything i love.” I respond.
“What are you talking about?” The god asked. A hissing came from around my feet.
“I won’t see my family again, nor my friends or my pets.”
“Yessss you will. You sssee…” The snake seemed to ripple, the colors faded to a midnight black. “I am not the Rainbow Serpent. My name issss Ssserpensss. I am reclaiming thisss world. You will ssssee your family again. But they will not be human.”
“I will see them again.” I say relived. “But why do you want to change people into snakes?” I ask him.
“Becaussse thissss isss my world! Every human hass a reptilian soul hidden within them. Not all are ssssnakess. But thosse that are have a place of honor asss my children.”
“So I received this honor then?” I ask.
“You have. Now. I think it’ssss time you were on your belly. Zafina?” The smaller snake struck without warning, pumping venom into both my legs.
“How long till the transformation occurs.” i ask the god bracing myself for the change. But before I have the chance to even think about what is coming, I find my legs giving out and I fall onto my belly.
Serpens goes behind me and rips the dead legs away, leaving me an extremely odd creature. No arms or legs...just a rather long torso.
“I bet I look like some sort of joke right now.” I say to myself waiting for my tail to form.
Serpens brought his head inches from mine. “You looked like more of a joke when you had those extra limbssss. You know, you are rather calm about thissss.” He observed.
“Well it's better to calm right now than screaming my head off.” I reply.
“True. Now. I’m going to put you in the pit of ssssnakesss here. It will accelerate your change. When you are done you will be jussst one of the thoussssands of ssssnakesss in thissss temple.”
“What am I going to do for the rest of my life?” I ask the god.
“Operate on inssstinct of courssse. The way nature intended.” Serpens slowly rolled me towards the edge of the pit, Zafina slithering beside me.
I then fall in the pit. I again keep my mouth shut to remain calm as i feel all of the snakes slithering on top of me.
“That’sssss it. Realize you are one of them…they’ve accepted you…” I feel a familiar snake on my skin. “Sssssssssshe hasss accepted you.” He said, drawing out the hiss. The snakes around me part, and I’m left looking at one. Zafina.
I smile and try to move to Zafina with no success.
Serpens grabs onto the nub that was my legs with his fangs and begins to pull. I can feel my body stretching behind me, sliding along the floor. Looking back, I see that the nub is gone, and in it’s place is a serpentine tail. The skin over the black scales looks very dead.
Now with a more serpentine form I again try to slither to my Zafina. This time, my body begins moving side to side, and I find myself free of my clothes, and a lot smaller. Without warning, Zafina strikes my face, the venomous fangs sinking into my head. But there is no pain. Just a pressure as my face cracks forward.
“Open your mouth young sssserpent. Let’sss see those fangssss.” Serpens says.
I feel a prickling in my muzzle, opening it, fangs, dripping with venom extend. In addition, a forked tongue flickers out. It's now getting harder to think. I don't believe i can talk anymore. I feel serpens grab my tail and pull, and feel as if something is sliding off of me. The human skin. It’s finally gone.
“You are complete young ssssnake. Let your memoriessss of humanity fade. You belong here in thissss temple…” Serpens said motioning towards the writing pit of serpents. Now able to move i slither my way to Zafina. My former human life means nothing now. All that matters is serving my mate.
Serpens watched as the new snake disappeared into the mass of former humans. An entire city now lived in this temple. New Zealand was for all intents and purposes, reclaimed. Hissing in satisfaction, he returned to his mate in Florida.
