I got the idea at some point of the Mikwa having prehensile ears with digits on the end of them, so I sketched it up to see how it might look. It's really odd, but I really like it - it makes them look more alien than just little bunnydonkeys, but I don't know if we're going to go with it or not.
Might keep it as some unusual mutation for Mikwa.
Their ears are going to be prehensile, though, to some degree - if not strong enough to support heavy objects, just to keep them from being in the way all the time.

Rather than being a natural occurrence, the ear-arms could be a result of nanotechnology. Either a result of the human's technology or exposure to the more advanced precursor "nanoparticles."
Realistically, the ear-arms would need some pretty significant musculature and dense connecting tissue to stay attached to the head. They'd either have fat heads or a fat "knot" on the back to keep the ear-arms from shearing themselves off under the weight of whatever they're hefting.
They'd also need a thick, muscular neck to support the weight of lifting heavy objects with appendages attached to their head. If the load were to suddenly shift or become unbalanced, like a large creature batted the shield up there, the impact could very well snap the poor Mikwa's neck. That's another reason this sort of mutation isn't likely to natural: evolution. Evolution tends to weed out creatures that might break their necks from just everyday activity.
But once you add "magic" or in this case "nanotechnology" to the equation pretty much nothing seems unreasonable. How is that tiny able to support huge, hulking arms that look fit to hoist an assault rifle with an underslung chainsaw? Naotechnology.
If only a few people have them, then suddenly they're a precious commodity Having arm-ears could be highly prized, indicating someone has been "tested" by the precursors and found worthy or something. Maybe the nanoparticles don't do this all Mikwa? Or if it's a result of human nanotechnology, maybe it's just really expensive or something? They don't do it for just anybody, it has to earned.
But then again... maybe forget all that nonsense. Who needs to consider any inkling of realism when the art style that sets the tone for this setting is decidedly not realistic, but cute, and whimsical! Ear-arms awesome and if you disagree, fuck you! I mean look at that epic ear-shield-while-hanging-from-a-pipe action up there. FUCK. I wish I could do that.

Yeah, their little pencil necks and the need for either thick obvious musculature, or frankly ridiculously dense musculature definitely crossed my mind xD
but I'm definitely one to lean toward the "SCIENCE!" explanation.
I wish I could do that too ;A;
Maybe the precursors are behind that shit. Who knows. Might not actually even get in the game x3.
