These are examples of some oft he firearms that the Mikwa have. Because they're not particularly militaristic, and they aren't big hunters, they don't really put a lot of value into crafting firearms.
To drive that point home, these guns are actually old Fulgori guns, from a time when the Fulgori Empire and the Mikwa were still allies and friends. They've been modified and maintained to keep them in good working condition, and arguably work better than they did when they were brand new, but they're decidedly old tech - working on powder charges and something like a flint lock.
They're used primarily for defense against the larger beasts that roam the island, and to threaten off any would-be attackers.
