Nice work on the spirit. I think he has the right color and transparency to make it very clear what he is, without looking too faded or blocking most of the view.

It's actually more that he's learning the skill through the experience of his past life, this was just how I chose to represent it! It's not entirely clear, but the Litwick at the front is the living person, and the Flareon is the dead person he once was!

I don't know that he'd compete with music in a true sense... But it is his livelihood! I guess he would compete with other musicians, unofficially...
Personally, I think it's more relatable to a friend, relative, or teacher teaching you how to play... The work still needs to be done on your own, but you have a bit of an easier time getting into it!
