Their defenses collapsing and the Tower having issued their evacuation order, Chris and Kyle are on their own now. The two encounter Lynn Everett, the Talwyn master of healing, and her young daughter, Topaz Everett.

That's what I had hoped. :) The first nine pages convey the last day of the war and what most of the major characters were doing at the time, which has a great weight on what happens in the future and who they are, so it was important to spend the proper amount of time on them to give them a suitable emotional weight.
At least to this point, Chris, Lauren, Kyle, and Topaz have never met each other, but they will soon. Thus far they've all been in parallel adventures, as seen in the other short stories. :)
While in the earliest versions of Topaz's story her parents were never actually seen, in constructing the backstory I felt it was necessary to include them and expand on them somewhat. I'm hoping to do another Topaz story during the war.
