It was a dark September night and the only light around was coming from the soft glow of the full moon that was poking through the clouds. Harry the vampire slayer was carefully checking various rocks that had been hidden in the undergrowth at the edge of a dense forest, whilst using a flash light to check a small notebook that was filled with pages of scribbly writing and various drawings of symbols. He had thought that the old woman was just senile when she had told him that the book would lead him to the resting place of an ancient vampire’s tomb, but so far the book had lead him to the exact locations of stones with strange markings that matched the ones drawn in the book. Harry had found a patch of grass that seemed to sparkle in the light of the moon, so he took a few steps into the middle of the strange grass to examine it more closely. All of a sudden he felt the ground give way beneath his weight making him fall a good few feet where he landed very awkwardly on his feet before stumbling from the impact and falling flat on his face.
With a grumble of pain he turned over to look up at the hole he had just fallen through, but was surprised to find that there was a tall looking creature leaning over him, “are you hurt? You had quite the fall” the creature asked kneeling down beside Harry which let him see that it was actually a strange looking bat. “Um yeah... my ankle feels like it's going to burst open in fact” the vampire hunter replied as the bat gently lifted his legs to have a closer look “it looks like you've twisted it so it would be very painful to walk on, allow me carry you somewhere where you can rest” the bat explained before he carefully scooped the canine up into his arms and proceeded to walk down the vine covered tunnel that the sink hole had revealed.
Harry couldn't quite believe what was happening as the bat gently scooped him up and started moving “um... sorry for ruining your roof” is all the vampire hunter could think to say, as he got carried into a circular shaped room that had steps leading up to a strange bed that looked exactly like a coffin. The bat smiled as he stopped walking just in front of the bed to look down at the canine in his arms “ah it's alright, it's been a good while since I had anyone drop by” he said with a chuckle. Something in Harry's brain suddenly kicked in as he looked up at the bats high collared cape and fancy looking shirt “you are the vampire the crazy old lady was talking about aren't you?” he asked now feeling a little uneasy about being held so close to the bat.
The bat blinked a few times then sighed and slowly nodded “yes, I am the ancient vampire that she spoke of, but I gather she didn't mention that I haven't been active for a number of years” he said looking down at the mould-covered steps of his crypt. Harry noticed the sadness in the bats voice and noticed that the look on his face was one of loneliness which made the vampire hunters heart sink a little “I thought I was going to find a blood thirsty vampire that attacked people on sight, but now I know the truth and I can see that you are very different than the others”. The bat turned his head to look back to Harry's face “you are the first person who has been willing to listen to me without running away just from the sight of me” he spoke softly as not wanting to scare the canine with his deep tone of voice.
Harry smiled up at the bat feeling more at ease as the bat kept hold of him “my old man taught me to listen and not to judge people by their looks so I will treat you no different to anyone else, besides it’s not like mike ankle is letting me go anywhere soon haha”. The bat nodded and his smile grew a little more “I am truly thankful that at least one person is willing to listen to me, without just thinking that I want to drink their blood” he said as he carefully adjusted his grip on the vampire hunter to make sure he was comfortably supported. “I hope you don't mind if I ask this, when was the last time you drank someone's blood?” Harry asked in a curious manner as he knew that vampires needed blood to stay immortal, the bat furrowed his eyebrows as he thought about it “umm I think the last time was about 3 years ago” he stated before looking back at Harry “why do you ask?”.
The vampire hunter perked his ears as he heard the bat's answer and seemed to silently decide something before placing paw over the vampires heart “what would you say if I offered to let you have some of my blood my friend?” he asked still keeping his smile. The bat looked down at the canines paw as it hovered over his heart looking a little taken aback by his statement “you'd willingly let me drink your blood? It will make you feel very light headed and may even make you faint” the bat said sounding very unsure with a little worry in his voice. Harry nodded and tilted his head back showing off his neck to the bat “I know that, I still want to help you out though” the vampire hunter said still smiling.
The bat took a few moments before he gently pulled the canine upwards and leant his head down close to his neck “I will make sure to think of a way to repay you my friend” he said very slowly, before he bit his sharp fangs into Harry's neck which made the vampire hunter yip at the sudden stab of pain. As the bat carefully sucked out the fresh warm blood Harry started to feel quite light headed just like the bat had told him he would, so he closed his eyes fully trusting the vampire not to drink too much. After a few minutes the bat released his teeth from the canine and leaned back before licking the access blood off his fangs with a look that would have looked a little sinister if anyone else was there to see it “thank you my friend, that will give me quite the boost of energy” he said looking down at the vampire hunter who looked very peaceful with his eyes closed “now I shall let you rest and take care of you until your injuries heal, as a means of thanking you” the bat whispered softly as he gently laid Harry down in his velvet lined coffin silently watching the canine drift off to sleep before carefully stepping down the stairs and disappearing into the darkness leaving his new friend to sleep.
