Um... All artists use references. In the beginning- even when they get pro too! I still use references. They are essential.
Also- practice makes perfect. If you go into drawing thinking "oh this sucks, everything I do sucks" and you constantly compare your stuff against really great artists and then give up... That is where you will fail. But if you go into drawing with the mind set of "Hey, Im not as good as so-and-so, but I have my own style and I can improve" then that is when you will succeed.

Back then, I sucked. I really did. I see that now. I always looked at other people's art and wondered why everybody was better than me. But I never sat and told myself "I suck, I'll never get better, I cant draw, boohoo" then I probably wouldn't be where I am today. Instead I was the one who believed in myself and listened to the encouraging words from the people around me. I worked at things, little things here and there. I never gave up. And hey, where am I today?
I know for a fact my work can use more improvements. I look at other artists like Spunky and Marymouse, Blotch and Vampireprincess2007. I wish I could be half as good as they are. But do I let it discourage me that I'm not? No. Because they have their style and I have mine. And I am proud of my own style. And I'm still working on improvements myself.
So never give up. Stop telling yourself that you suck. Believe in yourself. What you have in your gallery is actually really good. Referenced or not. Keep practicing by drawing characters like Bolt. Soon you'll be able to branch out and change things, improve your art, and even create your own stuff.
Everybody has to start somewhere.
If you give up now, just in drawing... Then does that mean you admit defeat in every other aspect in life? Just because something is a little difficult and someone is a little better than you? Just think about that.
