Endless Realms bestiary - Aethir Bastion
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
The art director wanted me to come up with some more angel concepts, so this is one of the chances I got to create my own creature - I picked the theme of protection, guardianship and defense, and came up with this guy ;P - sort of a cross between a living fortress and living armour. I imagine there could be whole teams of them, and when they line up together, they create a single solid wall.
I also thought doing a bigger/heavier version of them, inspired by war elephants, but I went with the smaller, less epic-level creature instead. Still think a giant angelic living mobile fortress would be cool, though :V
Anyway, it might be because I'm actually quite ill with the flu right now, but I found this guy a real challenge >_O Architecture and armour aren't exactly my fortes, so it was well out of my comfort zone, but I'm sure it's all good for me in the end ;P

Oh my god, do you mean Battle Chess? I had a super oldschool Battle Chess game in the late 80s/early 90s, and I had no idea how to play chess, but I always liked playing it to see the various pieces fight each other :b I always remembered the animation for the rook defeating the queen - the rook would come alive and devour the queen whole, and it always freaked me out as a little kid XD
yes, I was basically in the same boat, knew less than the basics, but so entertaining to watch...
man, now i'm feeling nostalgic.. need to play the game again some time, would be a worthy addition to my youtube channel, I basically record games for posterity
here's my channel playlists, if you ever feel like taking a trip down memory lane :)

I just had what I thought would be a crazy idea and I think it might work for angles. These are the walls, and would be able to act like the rook in a cheese set. Then you can have some nights jumping over the wall on horses for the nights, Bishops shooting through the doors at high speed to reach across the battle field, Pawns in front of the gate with angelic weapons and armor, The queen being a six winged angel that has an array of spells that circle her like a vertical halo, and the king would be cowering behind her.
And this set up could be for like the ending battle where your party has to advance on this heavily armored position and take some sort of artifact to set the world back in order. Then during the chaos you have the chaos scion (dragon) appear and just make things crazier since he lead your team to get said artifact.

Heh, I think that was the direction one of the team leaders wanted to go, with the angels representing Order rather than Good, and the demons representing Chaos rather than Evil, because he was uncomfortable with good/evil/gods/religion (why there's no alignment system in ER). Not really doing that anymore, though :b We worked it into the lore that, with the advent of sentient life, there needed a cosmic balance between Good and Evil to allow free will to exist, so the Aethir and Koros were created to battle for eternity for their respective sides.
