Well here's a little sompin' different. I was playing around today and decided to back off my "literal" style of drawing animals and just have some fun with pencils and texture, to see where that would take me.
Here is the result! Little burrito isn't really made to look realistic, he's made to create a neat, free style that I so badly need to work on. I actually had more fun with this little fellow than I have had with pencils for quite some time. It's very relaxing just to try to "do" something without the burden of being 100% accurate to every detail.
I love donkey's eye and his sweet little kissable mouth.
Go ahead, kiss him! Yes, it's alright...nobody's lookin'. :D

You know? That seems to be the consensus. I thought it was a bit cartoonish, but many seem to believe that it's quite realistic. All is in the eye of the beholder. If you think that it is so, visually, then it "is" so.
I was most relaxed while doing this piece. I think that feeling of ease gave the donkey her quality.

Maybe it's a bit of the "uncanny valley" effect and the (lack of) relaxation with the other image. That one seemed to try very hard for realism and only almost make it. This doesn't seem to try for it, but manages to sort of ease into it. Or at least the perception is that it *feels* more natural even if it's less photorealistic.

There's something about the composition of this pic, with the fence and jug balancing out the donkey's (excuse me, dawnkee's) head that's very enigmatic, like they're symbolic of some sort of story just under the surface. Ever see any art by this guy?:

I want to thank you for this comment most of all! I've always loved this drawing, it was a new kinda style for me at the time; sorta real-but-not-real picture with a stab at actual composition...and nobody ever paid attention to it. Except for you! *hugs* :) Thanks so much for having a serious look at my gallery; thanks, too, for pointing out that artist. I hadn't heard of him before, but I will explore his art (now that I'm aware of him). It's a good day when you can learn new things!
