My cousin JUST got this rat, he's not very old(a couple months)and we finally got him all settled into his new home. However he keeps sneezing, a lot, almost like he's got allergies or a cold. And were unsure as to what to do? Although the little dude has taken a liking to me and likes to sit in my shirt pocket(or try to).
I've already asked a couple people, and have gotten tips from a couple sources, but I just want to give my cousin all the information she can get. She was super excited to finally move on from hamsters to a rat and wants to be well knowledged.

When I first got my rats my female was also sneezy, I took her to the vet and they said she had a mild upper respiratory infection and gave me banana flavored antibiotics for her. uwub it wasnt expensive, not even $50 for the whole trip.
I WOULD SUGGEST just watching them for a few days? as I know that sneezing can be the result of abrupt environment and bedding changes? and you def don't want the stress of an unnecessary vet visit aaah.

Ahhh thanks, I kind of assumed he had a cold, my cousin's room gets really cold, and were still working on getting him more bedding and a sling.
I'll let her know, she's pretty worried, but hopefully this will help! And if it persists I'll probably take him to the vet soon.

if he was purchased from a petstore he most likely has an upper respiratory infection due to poor care and bedding choices. Make sure his bedding is not wood shavings of any kind (rats are allergic and get respiratory infections from these)
a small piece of dark chocolate a day should help with this, also allowing him to be in the bathroom with you while you shower (the steam helps ease it) if it persists for a long period of time take him to a vet to get him checked out.
Another thing to note; if he's a single rat you gotta get him out a LOT or else you'll end up with a very depressed rat
