Despite having obvious roots in traditional JRPGs, most of you following are likely to know that I've gone through great lengths to add modern features. Which brings me to this submission;
Here you see an alpha of the game's 'world map'. At least for me, one of the most unpleasant features of JRPGs is wandering around the world map, getting hit by encounter after encounter just trying to get back from one place to another. I also know that the complaint of many people (At least in MMO communities I've been a part of) is being harassed while trying to do backtracking.
Now, backtracking of some form is simply just the nature of the beast. But many modern RPGs have taken a lot of steps toward trying to either avoid it, or alleviate it. Which brings me to this alpha concept;
The map you see has three red spheres, the location you are at starts brighter than the rest. Pressing the arrow keys will then light a sphere in the direction you pressed, and dim the one you left behind. Upon selecting the desired location, a random number will be rolled, which will sometimes result in an encounter from a list.
The system already works, the encounters aren't part of it just yet, but other events such as how chests I've implemented award a random item, and/or random gold, have already successfully showed that the system works.
The most important part; That the spheres change correctly, and that the location you select is indeed where you go- that all works.
