Canis wendigo
Although you may know about creatures having similar names from the ancient Indian mythology, Canis wendigo is a quite newly discovered species, and even though they have common attributes (for example, they are both carnivorous, nocturnal creatures, and their body may seem unhealthily skinny)
Appearance
Their front legs are much longer compared to the others. This is due to the fact that they are capable of walking on two feet; and when they do so, they often use their front legs as arms. Their average height at the shoulders is 95-110 centimeters. Both long-haired and short-haired subspecies are known. Since they spend most of their times in caves and bleak, rocky mountains, usually their fur contains grey, black or other dark colors. Usually, wendigos have no tail. Scars are common. Sexual dimorphism is not present in any subspecies (so basically by the first look you can't tell whether you are facing a female or a male wendigo specimen).
Habitat
Smaller, isolated populations are present worldwide.
Lifestyle
Nocturnal. Prefers to spend hours of the day in caves which lie on its territory. Its night-vision is perfect and its hearing is amogst one of the most developed ones of all known species.
Diet
Carnivorous. Cannibalism is quite common, mostly occuring after fights for territories but according to some documents, newborn wendigos may also act aggressively, causing (sometimes lethal) damages to other wendigos.
Breeding
They spend most of their lives alone, only searching for a partner in late autumn - early winter, because that's their mating season. The parents don't stay together, and it's the female's task to raise the (sometimes really ungrateful) cubs.
Lifespan
Some legends say they can live up to 600 years. There have been no trustworthy, scientific documentation of this data yet.
Status
Though accurate number of specimens is unknown, they are least-concern species.
Legends
Many myths say killing a wendigo will bring enormous misfortune on the hunter. There have been actual happenings which seemed to prove this belief. For example, once a hunter killed a specimen to sell its body for the local museum. On the following week, he was hit by a train which left its rail, a tile fell on his head, was diagnosed with stroke, and after a couple of tests in the hospital when it turnt out that he was infertile and his wife's children are most likely from another father, he got a seizure and died painfully.
