The characters in this last page represent those I was working with at the time. From Left to Rirght, they are --
Wendame Clo Innore, a Mesuldan "invader"
A House Gamin
C'est Moi (I was younger then)
Cuil (a Teh Langgi like Tangelwedsible)
Marion (an Elderwood doll or puppet)
Malchance (a witch who was given the works by her own mechanical workers)
Saara Mar (a Kjola)
Petl Lindsey (a young Kjola adopted by Humans)
A more "sophisticated" version of Innore I added later

Just substitute "9/11" for "SDI" and I see little difference. I actually worried less about the future in the 80's when all I had to do is worry about the Soviets, than I do know when we have global warming and what might be the start of the next Great Depressin staring at us.
That's not the first time I've heard that complaint! I don't know what Van Loon was thinking. Maybe he just never read H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, or Alfred Jarry Some of us may be comfortable, or even ecstatic with our creations, but the other half would be horrified if confronted with the possibility.
