Sorry. That's the old "steam nut" in me talkin'. "Blowing Down" is a practice of using stem pressure to clear the lower passages of a boiler to clear "Stuff" called "Mud" from the lower plumbing of the contraption. It helps improve the thermal functions of the boiler and reduce the risk of a steam explosion. Most modern boilers from the 1940s on can do it automatically, but the smaller ones often have to have the process done by hand.
But anyway... It gives the "Steampunkerly" implied a good reason to wear goggles.
