As a kid I had a few books from British publishers which kinda gave me the impression that Our Bronze/Iron Age Ancestors - especially any who could be categorized as barbarians - wore checked stuff and plaids. (Never mind that my particular ancestors were in the middle-east, from Ukraine across Siberia, and in India at the time.)
