Actually, he is a soldier by profession, Special Forces trained.
There is an extensive back-story to the character, as he's the central protagonist in a story I'm writing, which is mainly based around his exploits and those of his friends/comrades on a series of adventures against a terrifying enemy, and the trials they go through together to fight for what they believe in.
