HEDGEHOG

I didn’t fire a single shot during those two weeks.
That was probably the most surprising thing about Hedgehog to me. For all intents and purposes, this should have been the closest to a military conflict that I’ll (hopefully) ever come, no? And sitting on a complex that oughta be a high priority target. Surely there’d be some mock attack, if only to keep us on our guard? And yet….
In hindsight, it shouldn’t have been a surprise, since I recall one of our instructors way back in boot camp commenting that we would be “going to some forest, setting all our gear up and then…” which he followed up with a mastrubatory motion.
Indeed, what little activity there was left to the folk coming from reserve. They got a bit of tactics training and went on some attack parties to recall their skills. But those of us current conscripts….we might as well not have been there.
Worth. That has been a recurring theme throughout this whole service. Worth and how you really have none. Literally, we were told that we were just little smurfs that nobody wants to see, to keep a low profile and stay out of sight. And, well, so we did. Dawdle about in the comms truck. Have a lunch. Perhaps sleep the day away in the tent. Sit idle. After all, all you’re good for is driving about and lifting things around.
