I had the idea to paint murals on the feathers instead of painting them to look like feathers. This is the first attempt. I love the pirate ship, I don't think I succeeded on the rocky cliff. Oh well, I still like it!
I'd like some suggestions with this part. I didn't paint the back side because I wasn't sure what to do with it. I don't want to paint another mural. I could just do the ocean and sky, I could paint it to look kind of feathery but with the colors from the front, or I could not paint it. I think the burnt wood looks cool enough to leave it blank. What do you think?

Hmm. I think you should try and make the back side look like a proper feather. Then it keeps the illusion better that you are painting on a feather, instead of a strange-shaped piece of wood. You could even do colors of a bird that matches the theme, not just the colors from the front. Like you could do a parrot feather design because of the cliche bird on the captains shoulder thing.
