ORAS is a pretty good love letter to R/S, with the updated game mechanics. I enjoyed it, but I did miss alot of elements from Emerald.

Try it at least once. It's very good, and it was refreshing.
It lets you get a lot of Legendaries for your new games, and pokes at new lore for the future.

Just don't expect a Battle Frontier. This is Ruby and Sapphire, not an Emerald remake (as disappointing as that is.)
