Battle in the Forest from Star Wars
Sometimes a final roduct really does live up to the hype. For two years our band conductor has sung the praises of our recording session of Donald Hunsberger's arrangement of music from the Star Wars Trilogy, and tonight, I have finally gotten to hear the results for the first time.
He was right.
Let this go to show what a good night's sleep can do. This recording session took place the night after our concert, where the Star Wars piece was last on our program. On the concert night, the brass player's lips were shot by the time we got to Star Wars, and the performance, in my opinion, didn't go as well as it could. But when we sat down the next night to record it, we were truly ready... and even if I do say so myself, the results are spectacular!
This is a sample from the Ohlone Wind Orchestra's latest CD, "Out Of This World".

OMG I just played this same arrangement last year with my college!!! We even toured with it around Costa Rica. I played timpani as well. Those solos were a blast! Awesome job on them. Unfortunately we didn't have the 7 or so percussionists it required so we had to skip out on the tuned cowbells and such.
Your bass drum player is doing quite an excellent job on those hits. I wish we had it sounding more like that.
I haven't gotten a chance to hear our recording but now I'm dying to hear it. From what I've heard our brass was suffering from some exhaustion as well but I can't blame them as those were some tough parts. That horn feature was pretty hit or miss all tour.
I'll quit babbling now. You have no idea how excited this makes me.

*grins* Great to hear from a fellow percussionist!
On this particular piece, I was not the timpanist, unfortunately. I was the one playing xylophone, glockenspiel, and tambourine. Getting enough percussionists was a challenge, and getting all the instruments was even more so; we were able to borrow half an octave of tuned cowbells, but only the lower half, so the person playing those had to improvise. We were able to capture some of the right sound, though, I think.
Our conductor told the bass drum player to "lift the tuba players out of their seats"... and he did! Scared the heck out of them the first few times. ;)
I'm actually jealous, you got to tour Costa Rica! That must have been an incredible trip, congragulations!
Are you studying percussion in college?

Nah, I'm not a performance major. I was a woodwind player but really wanted to do drum corps so I picked it up right before I went to college and have stuck with it as a hobby though at this point I've started teaching high school bands and if I ever choose a second career 10 years down the line it'd definitely be teaching music.
And yeah, Costa Rica was pretty incredible. My school collects instruments and then every 2 years we take them to Costa Rica and donate them to schools down there which really need them. Some of the kids down there were extremely talented. We gave a master class with the equipment we were touring around with. These kids had never had a chance to play on timpani so it was exciting to get to see them try it out. Their hands were so good it only took a couple of pointers and they were able to get some great sounds out of the instrument.
Your part for this movement was actually the only one I was kind of envious of.
