Once a small megabat of the Marianas Islands and Guam, the Guam Flying Fox fell victim to overhunting with the advent of modern weaponry. Though a delicacy amongst the Chamoru people, hunted in small, safe numbers for thousands of years, the introduction of guns decimated the population before they could be accurately described.
The introduction of the invasive Brown Tree Snake may have put increased pressure on the bat, as well. Continued efforts to balance traditions with conservation of the other species of the genus Pteropus continue to this day. This affects not only the bats, but the rainforests of the island that rely on the distribution of seeds by bat droppings and their predation on insects to maintain the status quo of the forest.
