Latex is nice. Latex is shiny. Latex is pretty. Latex isn't practical... Well, it has its uses, but these uses are severely limited. Hence, I've been looking into leather.
I like leather. It's socially more accepted, it's heavy duty, doesn't tear (if good quality), can be made airtight (not recommended), smells great, and protects very well. I used to have a very heavy leather jacket, when I lived in Germany, that protected me from things. Falling of my bike with 50kph, club fights, etc. Fun stuff.
In this test, I've tried to go for something leather-like. As leather has much more pronounced fault lines than latex and reflects light very differently, this required a different approach. I've yet to refine it, but I'm happy with the result.

leather is a total bitch XD i have tried it a few times in 3D ... the key is getting how the light reflects off the small ripples in it and it looks more defuse (not as sharp) http://designbeep.com/2012/04/06/40.....for-designers/

Leather is a lot more diffused with light indeed, but I'd like to create leather without the diffusion and go for a limited palette and hard cell-shading. It's difficult, but that's the challenge I've set for myself. Less blur and no use of brushes, as I'm getting tired of gradients...
