The original lion had courage as a matter of fact. In the original book, the idea was that the lion was ready to perform all of the incredible feats of courage, save for constantly stating how he would rather not do them, and at all times you could tell he was a BadArse through and through. The main reason he felt he was cowardly is because he "felt" fear in the first place. Which in itself is a play on words, BRAVERY is where you don't fear anything. COURAGE is where you fear everything yet ready to fight your instincts to flee.
