They're a smidge over 20" to start with, taking it down so the crown is flush with the stock still leaves you with a hair past 17" of space in front of the bolt face and a pretty warm fire. Just enough to deal with any bending behind the bayonet that my second M44 had. And it sounds even deeper and more like a Mosin than the other carbines did!
