Scientific Recording:
I observed something remarkable in Subject B today. Despite the fact that he is, undeniably, clinically dead, there was an unexplainable restoration of motor function. He can now walk (though not talk), eat (but not sleep) and clearly see and hear (without real comprehension of more complex stimuli however, many cognitive skills seem severely degraded).
It is obvious we are making progress, though at present formula 781 has not arrested necrosis. The corpse is a rotting horror, animated yet afflicted with a cell structure essentially inanimate. Wounds will not heal, damage sustained remains, and ultimately decomposition continues despite the illusion of renewed life and the restoration of low level functions within the brain.
Subject B was terminated today also, by a single gunshot to the head (caliber .45). A significant amount of trauma to the brain seems sufficient to end the life (unlife?) of an individual reanimated by F-781, which leads me to believe that most of the scientific ‘magic’ lies therein, and that once the medium through which it is channeled is damaged or destroyed so too is destroyed any recipient of 781.
I won’t go into the details which necessitated the second death of Subject B. Suffice it to say one of the side effects of 781 is a bizarre hunger, a ravenous, blind and all-consuming desire to devour living tissue, and that someone in the PR department will be writing a sad letter to a certain family today.
There is no rational explanation of this irrational desire at present, though it is rational to assume that while the compound 781 has been a stellar success in regards to the reversal of certain previous irreversible effects of death, in others it has been an abject (and dangerous) failure.
Research is to continue at Lunapolis, capitol of the Moon, as those powers behind the project have deemed further efforts on Earth to be far too dangerous. I have the honor of being appointed, once again, director of the operation, and am preparing to disembark from Terra via shuttle with a number of my most esteemed and most brilliant colleagues.
I believed, when this all began, and still believe, that immortality is within reach. With patience and perseverance I know we can accomplish our mission. A brighter future is closer and more real than most could ever dream. I feel this on a level I cannot describe, and so strongly that no words can express it. That I’m the one to pioneer this technology is surreal and sobering, and I understand the level of faith, trust and responsibility that has been placed in me.
For the sake of all, I will not fail.
