Once more I send my compliments out to your shading technique. It is REALLY noticeable in this piece with how each character has that "2.5 D" feel that games like Yoshi's Story tried for. The background is what ti is, but the characters are definitely beyond the background thanks to clever use of coloring to make them almost seem as if they are real if not for the delightful use of color to also retain their cartoon adorableness.
