One day a young Cubone with a scar on his skull was walking through a forest and he heard a noise. Upon investigation, he found a wounded Vulpix. She was badly hurt by an Ekans that was about to finish her. The Cubone used his bone club to stop and defeat the Ekans. He then tried bringing the Vulpix to a Pokecenter, but got scared off by a trainer. The female trainer took the Vulpix to a Pokecenter and healed it. She and the Vulpix became great partners. Eventually the Vulpix evolved into a Ninetials, named Daphne. Her trainer, Alexis, one day was talking to her best friend/crush/rival. He mentioned he got his first Pokemon a few days ago, a Cubone, that evolved into a Marowak while battling Team Rocket. Alexis challenged him and sent out Daphne. When he sent out his Marowak, named Bonehead, Daphne recognized the scar on his skull. She refused to fight him, remembering how he saved her. Using the translator her uncle, a Pokemon professor, gave her; Alexis was able to talk to Daphne to find out way. She told her the story and Alexis had to withdraw, she couldn't force her sweet Pokemon to fight the one she loved. Bonehead expressed his anger that he didn't get to fight by whacking Simon, his trainer, on the head with his bone. Simon just glared at him and the Marowak calmed down. Daphne ran up to him and started licking and rubbing against him affectionately. At first he tried to fight it but Simon explained that he couldn't escape it. "When a girl likes you, there's nothing you can do but accept it, buddy." So he begrudgingly accepted her affections. And they're trainers have been traveling together ever since, due to Simon not realizing Alexis had a crush on HIM when he gave the advice. Both males are resigned to their fates.
