Part of a microbiology experiment I did in college: we mulched up some foods and plated them on specific agar - in this case one that only allows coliform type bacteria. The nice yellowish tinge indicates fecal coliforms (i.e. E. Coli). Colony density (the number of spots) is representative of the amount of bacteria on/in the sample. The food for this particular plate was organic mixed greens.
