Nah, it's just something traditional.The Priestess takes care of a flag and appoints several 'guardians' to get it back if it gets stolen. Naturally, one of the main events in the festival is the ritual theft of the flag.
Mika is the priestess-in-training of her temple. Her 'guardians' are hers and Damien's friends! They all appeared in the student meal picture where Damien was having lunch with his friends, if you remember. It's all (mostly) for fun, especially when Mika 'accidentally' gives the flag to the triplets ;)
