One of my friends got me into InuYasha and I ended up coming up with this crazy theory that Shippo is actually older than he looks, and that he used fox magic to transform himself into a child to cope with his parents deaths, but it essentially puts him in the mindset and on the power level of a child, so he often forgets he's older.

And thus his apparent random occasional sage knowledge.
