Neo-Paleontology: A Crushing Blow
By born2beagator and cloud2105
Professor Austin pulled the bus to a stop outside the Dakota paleontology dig. His five students got out and went about their assignment. “Don’t go far guys. Meet back here in an hour.”
Derek got out of the bus and immediately grabbed a bag of tools and went to go find a prime spot. He wanted it to be partially shaded, but not too far from the bus as he wanted to be able to get back. Finding one that is covered by a precipice, Derek started his hunt.
The professor watched his target from above. When he wasn’t looking, he pushed a rock off the top and it landed on the student’s leg, crushing it. Austin smirked as he heard the scream of pain and ran down.
“Derek! What happened!?” He yelled.
“ What do you think happened Professor Austin? I have a rock currently giving my leg a hug and it seems like I’m gushing out red liquid at a very fast rate. “ Derek said with obvious pain with his sarcasm.
The other students rushed to them and they got the rock off. “Okay guys, in the bus, trip over.” He put the large shin bone he’d found in his back. They picked Derek up and set him in the bus. The drive to the university was short.
“Guys, head home. I have to take care of Derek.” The professor said to looks of confusion and comments of: “Hospital?”
Derek hated hospitals with a fiery passion, and couldn't stand needles even more. This is one time he would have to swallow his pride though. Derek needed his leg much more than his fear of hospitals, and the chance of any secondary infections was scary to him.
“ Please don’t let me die Professor Austin” asked Derek.
“Oh stop whining. It’s just a leg. I can fix those.”
“I’m worried about secondary infections.”
“When I’m done it’ll be as if you have a brand new leg.” Austins says as he gets the surgery table ready.
“Wait a minute, you are going to operate on me!”
“I am. It’ll save you hospital bills, and I am a doctor you know. I’ve performed surgeries before.”
“Can you knock me out before you do anything Professor?”
“Of course. I call it the forget me stick.” And before Derek can say anything Austin hits him with a bat. Just to be sure he added some general drugs to keep him under. With that he got to work.
The professor had read about this kind of...well spell was the only word for it. Apparently if one transplanted the bone of human sized dinosaur into a human, said human would become a dinosaur themselves. It’d never worked before, heck no one had tried it, but he would be the first.
Austin cut open Derek’s leg and removed his shin bone. Carefully, he pulled out what he had identified as a Pachycephalosaurus bone out of his bag and set it in Derek’s leg. To his utter amazement he saw ligaments and tendons attaching themselves to the bone! Could this really work?
Carefully, he sutured up the leg, it bulged slightly, but the kid had a dinosaur bone in there. The true test would be when he tried to walk. Suddenly he felt something odd under his hands. Lifting them up, he saw the skin had discolored around the sutures, turning a greenish color.
“The beginning of scales.” He mouthed in amazement. Work done, the professor sat down to wait for his patient to awaken.
Derek woke up hours later with a pounding headache and a throbbing pain in his right leg. He thought for a moment, and realized that he can feel pain in his leg now. Professor Austin must have been successful in his operation attempt.
“ Professor Austin are you there?” asked Derek.
“I’m here Derek. I had to transplant an entire shin bone.” Austin said, wiping sweat off his brow.
“How did you do that, and what time is it?”
“Surgery of course. Take a look.” He said, motioning to Derek’s leg.
Derek looked at his leg and smiled. He moved to his professor and hugged him as his stomach let out a fierce growl.
Austin laughed. He’d missed the discoloration all together. Derek’s leg around the stitches was very green now. “As for time...do you live on campus or off campus?”
“I live off on campus professor, in the student dorms, but the elevator is out and I don’t think my leg would like me taking stairs for a while.”
“Try walking on it.” Austin said, curious to see how he’d walk with a dinosaur bone in one leg.
Derek tried to walk on his newly fixed leg but it was painful to watch. It was akin to a cripple with double ear infections after binge drinking. He couldn't even take one step before falling awkwardly and had even more trouble getting back up.
“Well it’s a new bone.” Austin said. “What did putting weight on it feel like?”
“ I can’t describe the sheer pain, but it hurts so much.”
“Let me look at it.” Austin said. Derek pulled his pant leg up. “Derek? Look at your leg around the stitches.”
The area around the stitches is now dark green, but Derek is in too much pain and too hungry to notice the changes.
“Your leg is very swollen.” It took all Austin’s self control to not say. “Go figure. Dinosaur bone in human leg equals swelling.”
“So what am I supposed to do until the swelling goes down, and can we get something to eat?”
“What do you want?” Austin asked as Derek’s stomach gives a loud grumble. Louder than a human should be able to emit.
“For some reason I really want some salad, but I hate salad so much. Why do I crave it all of a sudden?”
“I have steak in my staff room fridge.” Austin offers.
“Can you bring it here or can you help me to the staff room?”
“Let’s get you walking a bit.” Austin helps Derek up. “You have got to put pressure on that leg so the new bone can adapt the rest of your leg to it.” The professor begins slowly towards the staffroom.
Derek walked with the professor to the staff lounge, and the more he walked, the more the pain eased up.
Austin stopped as Derek stood still. “Derek? What’s wrong?”
"The pain in my leg is gone professor."
Derek took a couple of steps on his own and was getting the hang of walking with his new bone.
“Feeling better already?” Austin asked in surprise.
" It still feels sore , but it is fine otherwise "
“Let’s have a look.” Austin said.
Derek lifted up his pant leg to give the professor a better view.
“Look at your leg Derek.” The professor said in awe.
Derek looked at his leg like his professor told him to do. He was walking on his tiptoes for some reason. He tried to put his heel to the ground, but ended up falling face first onto the floor.
Austin helped him up. “It seems you are having a reaction. You leg is green and white.”
“Why is my leg turning green and white? Is my flesh rotting from the inside out? Why did you think it was a good idea to operate on me?” Derek asked clearly panicking at this point.
“It it painful?” Austin asked.
“No , but a human leg shouldn’t be turning green, and you were the one who operated on me!”
“Do you want me to keep you overnight so we can keep an eye on you?” The professor asked.
"That sounds better than any alternatives I can think of."
“Okay...food.” Austin opens the fridge. “So I got steak, burgers, what would you like?”
"I'm hungry enough to eat anything professor Austin, so I really don't care anymore."
Austin took out a steak and set it on the table. He noticed a slight point in Derek’s shoe, as if something was pressing against the fabric.
Derek was oblivious to the pain coming from the cramping in his shoes, but noticed something else. He took a bite of the steak but he was not able to chew through the tough piece of meat for love nor money.
“Is something wrong?” Austin asked.
"This steak is as hard as a hockey puck, I can't chew it at all "
“I have some fruits and vegetables.” Austin said.
"Fruits and vegetables sound wonderful right now Professor Austin" Derek said eagerly.
Austin got out a big bowl of fruits and vegetables. Setting it on the table, he noticed that two other points had joined Derek’s first in his shoes. This was really working!
Derek quickly got to work on the bowl of greenery. He was so hungry that he didn't notice that he emptied the bowl in mere minutes.
Austin noticed the right leg shifting before his eyes. He needed to get Derek to bed. “Hey bud, let’s get you some rest. I have a nice greenhouse area for you.”
Derek looked his professor in his eyes and let out a giant yawn before replying "That sounds nice Professor Austin, where is the greenhouse?"
The professor led Derek to the back. They entered his greenhouse. “I modeled it after the cretaceous period. Should make you feel right at home. Make yourself a nesting area, and get some sleep.”
While Derek would have come up with a retort for all of the dinosaur related quips , he was too tired to do so. Derek made slow work of making a nest, and looked like he needed help speeding up the process.
Austin took a shovel and helped him dig out a divot near a stream he’d created. “There you go. Get some sleep.”
"Thank you Professor Austin" said Derek as his shoe finally gave out from his new three toed foot came out. However, Derek was too tired and laid down in his divot and fell asleep instantly.
Austin looked over the saurian leg. Green and white scaled...clawed. This was really working. Now...he needed to meet with his university leader. He wanted to keep his dino. “Mr. Hosmer?” He called on his phone. “Meet me in my office please.”

Austin leaned back in his chair as his boss entered. “Evening sir.”
The president cleared his throat and said "What seems to be the matter Austin?.”
“Nothing much. I only just made you the richest university on the planet and the envy of the paleontological community.” Austin said casually.
For a second the president was speechless, but soon found the words he was grasping for, and said in shock "I hope you can back up these claims, or this has been a waste of my time Austin."
“I’m creating a Pachycephalosaurus.” Austin said plainly.
"This better be a joke Professor Austin. Creating life out of nothing."
“Not nothing. Out of a human.” Austrin said. The moment of truth, how would he react?
" Out of a human, you don't mean what I think you mean Austin..."
“I do indeed sir. I’m transforming a human into a dinosaur. A living, breathing, dinosaur.” Austin said proudly.
"Either you're the envy of the scientific community or a mad man. Just make something up for me to approve and don't mention anything of creating a dinosaur okay?"
Austin looked at him in shock. “You are okay with this?”
"I don't know, but if you already started changing the student, it would be worse to stop mid transformation.”
I opened the wall behind me overlooking the green house. “There he is. Derek. Look at his right leg.”
The president looked at the leg and was in shock in awe. The good professor was telling the truth. " I have one condition, we make him our new mascot."
Austin looked at him in shock. “Well that would take some training, but should be doable. By the way...I did this by simply transplanting a bone in his leg.”
" I am not interested in the details Austin, but you will be receiving a raise and a bonus"
Austin nodded. “Well tomorrow will be interesting. Derek is going to find out what’s happening to him. Thank you sir.”
______________________________________________________________________________
Austin woke early in the morning and found Derek eating some leaves off a nearby bush absentmindedly. “Derek! Morning!”
Derek swallowed what was in his mouth and turned around to see the professor "Good morning sir."
Austin took stock of him. The young man stood on his left human leg...but the right. It was the leg of a dinosaur. Green and white, scaly, three toed. “Derek have you even realized what you were just doing?”
"I wasn't doing anything professor , what are you talking about?”
“You were eating a bush.” Austin said plainly.
"Oh, so I was. So how are you professor?" Derek ask politely, which was not like him at all.
“I’m good. How do you feel Derek? Leg okay?” Austin asked looking at the saurian foot protruding from the student’s jeans.
"I feel as good as new professor. You pulled of a miracle. So can I go to my classes?"
“New is an understatement. Derek have you looked at your right foot lately?” Austin asked.
" I have not professor , but why do you ask?"
“I’m going to put it bluntly. You have the right leg of a dinosaur. A pachycephalosaurus to be exact.” Austin dropped the bombshell.
Derek stared at his leg silently for what felt like hours. Then out of nowhere , he burst out into laughter , like he was in denial. "This is a great prank Professor Austin."
The professor brought out a portable X-Ray. “I assure it is not. Look at your leg through this. I’m betting the bones themselves have changed.”
Derek took the machine in hand and examine the leg. The look on his face changed from denial to shock. "What the fuck did you to me!"
“It must be the bone I put in your leg.” Austin said.
"Give me one good reason I shouldn't use this leg to crush your chest cavity"
“Because this isn’t going to stop Derek...and I can help you adjust.”
Derek collapsed to the ground and burst into tears. His future is now gone, and he didn’t even know why.
Austin knelt next to him. “Your mind will likely change also Derek. You are going to be the first living dinosaur in over 65 million years.” The professor said proudly.
"If this is my fate, then promise me you will be the one taking care of me , and I don't get a girly name."
“What the. You are turning into a dinosaur and this is the request you give me?”
"What do you expect me to ask for Professor Austin?"
“Nevermind. Yes...I will take care of you….your hair.” Austin says suddenly. “It’s falling out.”
"I thought dinosaurs were known for their long flowing locks " Derek said wryly.
Derek started idly munching on his shirt.
“What are you doing?” Austin asked.
Derek could have sworn the floral pattern on the shirt was real flora, but it tastes horrible and bland. His stomach growls even louder then ever. Suddenly his left leg started rippling.
Austin watched in fascination as the boy’s toes merged into three, and scales marched up his leg, leaving him standing on two saurian legs.
Derek continued to chew on the weird tasting flowers. He wondered why they were staying still despite him chewing away at them.
“Derek?” Austin snapped in front of him. “Derek!!!”
"Yes professor , what is it?" Derek said as he stopped chewing.
Austin just pointed at his legs, ruined shoes around the left foot now.
"My left leg changed now , and it feels better , and easier to stand " Derek said then went back to chewing on the shirt
“Derek why are you eating your shirt?” Austin asked with a laugh, partly at his antics and with how quickly he was losing intelligence.
"What shirt? I'm trying to eat these tasty looking flowers " Derek replied
Austin grabbed his shirt and showed him the chew marks. “Shirt.”
Derek lifted a hand and pointed to a flower "Flowers."
“Derek..this is a shirt. You can’t eat it.” Austin said holding up the fabric. He saw the skin underneath beginning to look green.
Derek pouted "I want to eat the pretty flowers though."
Austin shook his head. Derek’s brain was changing already. “Okay Derek, I want you to listen very carefully. You can’t let your brain change yet. I need you to concentrate on me, the human. I need to help you complete.”
Derek shook his head and stared at the professor. "What was I doing, professor Austin?”
“Eating your shirt because there was flowers on it. Your legs have changed. You must be losing intelligence now.” Austin said.
Derek blushed then slapped himself. Was he really slipping that fast?
“Pachys were not intelligent animals. There are some things we need to go through before you lose who you are.” Austin said as he saw the bald head of the kid start to harden. “First and foremost, you cannot leave this room unless I say.
"I have one problem with this. What's to stop me from forgetting all of this as well?"
“Oh you will. When your brain changes you are going to forget everything about being human I’d wager. Leave keeping you in here to us.” Austin said. “Uh...Derek...I want you to try headbutting the wall.” He said suddenly.
"Sure thing professor, just stand back" Derek said right before he headbutted the wall.
When he turned around, little horns had grown out around a bony skull cap. “What did you feel?”
" I felt the wall hit me, but it was more of a ticklish feeling than anything.”
Suddenly Austin saw the young man’s jeans tent. “Derek...I think you are growing a tail. This is happening fast.”
Derek starting wagging his growing tail and licked the professor's face.
“Okay Derek...I want you to concentrate on the Pachy’s mind growing within you. I need you to try and implant an image of humans on there, I need you to not see us as a threat when you lose your intelligence completely.” Austin said as Derek’s lips hardened and pushed forward into a short beak. Scales crept up his head and met with his crown.
Derek tried as hard as he could to do what the professor told him to do. It was getting harder and harder to think straight. He sniffed the professor for some reason and the word friend appeared in his head.
Austin watched as the changing boy bent down and his jeans ripped apart slowly to admit a long, stiff tail. “Derek? Are you still in there?” He asked uncertainly.
" It feels to good to *Raaaaa* Professor Austin."
The professor recoiled a bit.
"Why friend be scared? I no hurt friend.”
“Derek? Do you know that name? Derek?” Austin asked as Derek’s face slowly flowed forward.
“ Who Deraaaa? Are you him?” Derek said sniffing the professor more.
Austin watched as Derek’s eyes rounded out and shrunk a bit, leaving green eyes with a circular black pupil. “No, you are Derek. Do you know the name Derek?” Austin tried once more.
The creature looked at the small creature like he was speaking another language. Did it not know how to speak properly? He wondered what was wrong with friend and why he didn’t know how to speak.
Suddenly Derek’s pants ripped off as his torso expanded, causing him to hunch forward.
“So we need a new name for for you. How about...Ceru? Or Hardcase?” Austin asked. “Come on buddy, think hard, we need a name you’ll respond to.”
The dinosaur ignored the creature at the first two names, as he thought they were dumb.
The forming Pachy’s shirt stretched tightly over a clearly scaled chest. He was almost done, Austin had to find a name while the creature could understand him at all.
He sniffed the human and licked his face the looked around for food, as he was hungry.
Then it came to Austin. “How about Crush?”
The dinosaur stopped eating and wagged his tail happily for a bit, then ate some more.
“Crush, come here bud.” Austin said as Crush’s arms weakened into thin things with sharp claws.
Crush approached the strange creature and sniffed it. He smelled like, father. Crush gave the creature’s face a big lick out of happiness.
Austin looked at the new pachycephalosaurus in awe. A dinosaur. A live dinosaur. Who care if it had once been human, nothing was left of the human. What was more, Austin knew how to create more of them. A rather devious plan began to take shape. But then he noticed Crush struggling with the shirt stretched around him.
“Here buddy.” He cut the fabric off...and revealed the dinosaur in all his glory. As a final test, Austin held up a picture of Derek. “Crush do you know this human?”
Crush tiled his head at the strange looking leaf. Why does it smell funny and look weird? He licked it to make sure.
“Nothing left.” Austin said. “Crush...this is your home. I will check on you later okay?” Austin backed towards the door.
He followed closely behind his father, almost like a shadow. Where was he going?
“Crush...I need you to stay.” Austin said, pointed at his nest.
Crush went back to his nest and curled up sadly, as he didn’t want daddy to leave.
“...I’ll have you company soon.” Austin said, and walked out to phone the president. “Sir? Yes he is finished, come to my office please.”
