So I've been meaning to do this for a while for a bit of fun. I found the Acapella online a few months ago and managed to get some time to do the cover of this song.
The song is by Rapper Flo-Rida and is a "cover" itself, i.e it's used the hook from another song you may be familiar with (You Spin Me Round (like a record)). I thought the melodies would lend themselves to a guitar-driven track so here it is. I actually quite like this song, it's got stupid lyrics but it's got a good tune to it. You may also recognise this song as the one at the end of the first "Hangover" film, where the photographs are playing over the credits. I am not a fan of that film, though admittedly that is where I first this song a few years back :)
Gone for a more modern guitar tone on this one as it needed to be "big" to fit the panned vocals. As ever, recorded using - Caparison 7 string dropped to G for rhythms and for leads, an Ibanez 6 String Bass with an Axe-Fx Ultra for all the guitar effects along with an acoustic guitar for the clean passages.
Hope you enjoy and that it gives you a new angle to listen to this song from ;)
Had to compress this a lot to fit, so apologies for any drops in quality!

I can't say I've heard either version actually haha
I use Cubase 5 as the software and I use an Axe-Fx ultra for all the guitar and bass sounds. I use an M-Audio external soundcard and a Caparison 7 string for the guitars, Ibanez 6 string bass for the bass and the drums are EZDrummer, but I layer a few different drum-softwares together to get a bigger, hopefully more convincing, sound. That's it in a nutshell. To be fair, the tone all comes from the quality of the guitar and the axe-fx and I could go into more detail about how I have the axe-fx set up... but that'd take aaaaaaages XD

It's a big investment of time and energy (and money) but I find it's worth it. I consider myself to be utterly amateur at recording, my setup "sounds" complicated but it's ludicrously basic XD I use earphones that I got with my old Samsung phone as my "monitors" for example haha I mix and record everything with them hahaha The only really expensive bits are the Axe-FX and the guitars, which I bought to use live, it's a crap laptop with a copy of cubase a friend gave me for free when he upgraded and a cheap sound-card XD
Lol well then, it seems that I should probably think about upgrading later in life lol I still got a ton of stuff to practice and learn about with my guitar. But recording and making music has always been an interest of mine. But i mean i still need to practice scales and roots n stuff lol i know how to do basic soloing, but it's improvisation and articulation (i think that's what it's called) i need to work on more. x3
Improvisation is quite tricky because it requires quick thinking and knowledge of notes. I built up my improv skills by just jamming to stuff like Iron Maiden. I wouldn't learn how to play the song, so I'd literally just have to do my own thing to it, as close to the actual song as I could get, and just did what I fancied over the solo sections. You actually learn the song too that way XD
Lol it is super tricky, first song I've ever tried playing over like that was Epic by Faith No More. I bring that song up A LOT lol, but for great reasons. It's such a good song to kinda start off with for soloing. But man, this is why I love talking to other guitarists, especially really good ones, cause you learn some really neat stuff. I've a;ways looked up tabs for the rhythm selections then the lead selections, never really started off doing my own thing. I mean, recently I've been learning by ear, but not necessarily done my own thing all the time. I ought to start doing that because I'll soon find a really gnarly style that sorta fits how I play and sound.
Epic is a great song, good fun to listen to and to jam along to XD
Yeah, jamming to songs rather than learning them is a much better way to develop your own sound because you're not copying someone else, you're interpreting it. I spent far more time jamming to Maiden and Judas Priest etc than anything else because it's good fun, it tests your skills and it helps you develop. Obviously it needs to be backed up with scales, chord progressions etc, but you can then put those into use because you'll start to hear the scales other bands are using and you'll know which notes to choose for a solo XD

Finding your own skills, and developing on your own by finding out how you enjoy playing and what kind of style you enjoy playing is what makes playing any instrument fun! But man that beginner path and even routes down the intermediate path can be frustrating, but it really does take dedication and effort to keep going and learning. Lol can't be Yngwie Malmsteen or Steve Vai in 20 minuets. x3
Lol now that I remember, there is one song in particular I did do a sort of improvisation thing with. Not sure if you're into Techno, EDM, etc. But There was an artist by the name of Renard Queenston who did a remix of a song someone on FA made called Spotlights Go Dark. I thought it'd be cool if I tried to play the synth riff, as well as play a rhythm guitar and add my own solo. It surprisingly turned out really badass!

I first heard this on the Dawn of the Dead remake, where it features :)
I love reinterpretations of songs. As I've said, it's all music at the end of the day XD

Hehe, thanks mate :D I would only tune my 7 string down to G haha, my 6 strings have all got quite light-gauge strings on so they'd sound horrific downtuned. The 7 string I used for this is generally in B standard, but I have pretty heavy guage strings on, so it can juuuuuuuuuust about handle going down to G XD
Thank you :)
The bass chain that I have set up on my axe-fx currently (well, the one I used on this one anywany) is:
Compressor - Graphic EQ (Set up quite specifically to be fair, can take a pic if you want to see details) - Amp (59 Bassguy) - Cabs (4X10 bass and 2x12 Blue) - Another Graphic EQ (Again, quite specific settings) and an Enhancer on the end.
