Endless Realms bestiary - Giant Jellyfish
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Like the djinn, this creature started off as another! I was asked for "an exotic psionic from the dream realm that floats and has tentacles, capable of mentally enslaving others to create thralls" - it immediately made me think of mindflayers, except I knew I wanted to make mine as NOT-mindflayer in appearance as I could, while still fulfilling the details of the art director's request. Inspired by things like brain-sucking Metroids and the terrifying flying Medusa from the old Ecco games (that thing freaked the hell out of me as a kid o_o), I made a PSYCHIC DEATH JELLY OF DOOM 8D However, the art director just couldn't buy it as an intelligent slave-driving dream-creature, and felt it was better off as a fearsome life/mana-draining jellyfish of the sea. So there you have it!

Heh, I hope not, too! It's really up to the art director (I call her the art director, in that that's her role for me, but she's actually the project leader, since our team is super small) if she wants to keep the original creature concept or not. I don't know if she realized how similar it was to mindflayers until I pointed it out, and maybe that discouraged her, but I think the general idea of a malevolent, intelligent psionic race that creates slaves/thralls through their psychic powers is cool and there's lots that could be done with it still.
When I first looked at it I thought it was a wind element jellyfish lifting off the ground going whoosh and that'd be badass, (hint hint? ;D(only if it works out in the end)) but this concept is awesome, pretty classic, (its always the annoying jellyfish that sap stuff from you and immobilize you (>:l evil little buggers....)) and you used color really well :3
Thanks a lot :) I actually was hoping it wouldn't be used in a "classic" sort of way (I mentioned in the description how originally it was supposed to be a race of intelligent, slave-driving psionic dream creatures), but once the art director saw it finished, she was like, "Nah, it's just a jellyfish" XD
When I first saw this I thought that this massive jellyfish would be perfect to hold up a traveling under water city with four of those massive arms. Then I read the description and thought it was going to be excellent. The giant jellyfish controlling the entire city that it's carrying. All the people under its control and people that travel their either get mind controlled, or shunned, unless they have something to do with the ruler of the city. Then I read more and was like....welp their goes my imagination of a jellyfish taking over people. But I guess it can still drain the mana of people, xD
*chuckles* I know, right! I was disappointed, too :b Psychic death jelly was gonna be awesome! But a giant magical jellyfish is cool, too.
... Heh, love the idea of a whole city being carried around by a giant jellyfish (sorta like an underwater Discworld), but it turns out the city is being "run" by it via psychic powers :b A number of stories I've come across with that kind of concept, but it's still always fun, and they often come up with novel ways of presenting it :3
