Endless Realms bestiary - Djinn
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
This one didn't start off as a djinn - rather, I was given the concept of "an exotic humanoid who will grant your greatest wish, but often at an unknown and terrible price." It made me think of the classic genie - not the manic Robin Williams genie who's perpetually exuberant and surprisingly generous with his wishes - the kind that is asked for immortality, and grants the curse of eternal consciousness and suffering upon your decaying body, except the art director's idea was one that often takes its price in the form of part of one's psyche, memories, or sanity. After completing the design, it was decided that it might better suit a normal djinn rather than the one the director came up with, but I think the unique twist in lore is still fun; it just might end up being made into a separate monster, is all!

Haha, yup, although some attempts are more fun and whimsical than others. Like, who thought it was a good idea to turn the Hunchback of Notre Dame into a Disney movie? A movie about a deformed lonely person who's abused at the hands of his murderous adoptive father as well as the prejudiced society he wishes he fit in with - I know! We'll make it fun by giving him gargoyle friends who are arguably completely imaginary and a product of his desperately lonely mind! 8D
Aye, that one is completely messed up. But that one isn't even a fairy tale. Speaking of fairy tales, in the version of Little Red Riding Hood (it's just Crvenkapa- Red Hat in Serbian, so it's much more convenient) that I knew as a kid, the wolf swallowed both LRRH and grandma, so the hunter had to cut him open
Well, you can't let kids believe that somebody will always be there to save them. But now fairy tales are just another milking cow for big film/cartoon companies... But don't get me wrong, I really love some of the Disney adaptations, especially Hercules (despite an abundance of horrible mistakes that I just can't ignore, being such a mythology nerd)
*nods* I'm actually still a pretty big fan of both good kids movies (the kind that are meaningful to adults as well, but approachable enough for kids), which often have a fairy-tale-like feel to them, but I'm also a big fan of oldschool fairy tales and mythology - there's something really raw and visceral about them that reflects a very different, much more brutal way of life that's long gone, and I think that's cool, too.
Yes. Waching cartoons based on it, you would never guess how terrible Greek mythology gets sometimes. I've read an awesome book by Robert Graves about Greek mythology and every myth has a possible metaphorical explanation. It pretty much solidified my opinion that myths are actually true, but not in a literal sense
Ah, I like him a lot! I'm not sure I would make any wishes of him, though, without a friendly song and dance; he doesn't look particularly trustworthy! xP
Kind of silly, but I love that his face is enshrouded in his cowl. Even the traditional, malevolent djinn's appearance tends to be frequently ruined for me by the head or face, because depictions like to stick to the pulled-back pony tail, pointed goatee look, which has never struck me as especially intimidating. Without the face explicitly depicted here, your djinn looks much more formidable.

Thanks! Hehe, maybe if you exchanged bodies with him, it'd strip him of the ability to screw you over on your wish somehow :b Glad you like him so much! And yeah, I tried to make his design a combination of "shady/sketchy/roguish" and "dignified/powerful", like maybe he could disguise himself and approach people as just a merchant, or he could approach people as a powerful noble, and trick unsuspecting people into "wishing" something that the djinn can then screw them over on :b
Well, I wasn't sure if we would be distinguishing ifrit from djinn, so I went with the most classic description of djinni and kind of assumed it could apply to both, although if necessary, it wouldn't be too hard to make a more fiery ifrit.
Also, technically, this game doesn't distinguish between Infernals and Abyssals, really, but if you're interested, I've done a number of demony critters already! They can all be found here: http://jocarra.deviantart.com/galle.....58/ER-Bestiary
