People can't hold smiles long and pictures used to be literally burnt onto the film. So, a pose you could hold for 20 minutes or more was needed, that's why you see a lot of blur marks and what look like motion blurred heads in old time pictures. :o That's why eyes never look completely clear. xD No one could not blink for 20 minutes. XD
