Former military base turned children's asylum. This base was in operation until World War 2 as Fort Dupont, closing at the end of 1945. After that it became a home for children with disabilities. The place was infamous for the treatment of children held there, and closed in the mid 80's.
Since then its come to serve a variety of purposes, one side a drug rehab center, another a VA hospital, and other buildings and property set aside for selling off state property like government owned vehicles. But much of the campus remains abandoned. Most of it is listed on the historic register and there are hopes of building a trendy mixed use community here. But a lot of buildings now appear to be beyond repair, so I'll have to wait and see how much is used in the new community.
One thing is for sure though. The day they clean this place up is the day I stop coming here.
