I feel like an outsider in this issue but I do feel Vasquez 's art is very over rated (mainly because he haven't drew anything to convince me he has talent) and his art is an out mixture anime and Tim Burton. I know, Filler's bunny's head isn't that big but I used him as a reference anyway because he is the only character in JV's art that I somewhat like.
Sure, I know I'm a hypocrite because my art isn't appealing or original but I don't need to be a master artist to know something is crap.

HEY HE WAS INSPIRATION TO A GENERATION IN NEED AND AND
no, the art wasn't ever *that* great, but the shorts in the Johnny comics were fucking GOLD, and despite the politics, Zim was so much fun =D
It's the fan art and knock-offs that cheapen everything, and I think JV's art doesn't hold up well after the over saturation of imitators.

Strangely enough, Dragonball Z is what made me like comics. I was kinda a fan (hey, everyone was back then!) but my brother was and still is a big fan. He would buy manga of all the animes (yeah, he is a black weeaboo) and read them. I looked at them and liked the cover art and the art inside. I find the original art in mangas better then the animes. And then I saw "Crumb"...
I really think the fan art is what made me hate his art in the first place. I liked Zim (for a few episodes...until Gir became damn annoying) and even have the box set but the the fans make him look like a fucking god and I think that is what made me critical about his drawings. People say "HE IS SOOO WONDERFUL!" so I look at it and I don't see the magic everyone else sees. I see, "he's good but..ehhhh..." and people get pissy because I am not "amazed" his art. I personally think his style before Invader Zim looked better and I missed when he would crosshatch.
Yeah, fantards ruin everything, and it's hard to look at the original without thinking of all the tardish copycats and rehashes.
Not even in the same league, but same principal, is the Deconstructionist theory that when art is reproduced, and/or parodied, it slowly looses it's original "aura". That is, to say, that the hype around the Mona Lisa has blown her so out of proportion, that her image is so overused and parodied, that when we see the original, we all go, "Well fuck, that sucked. What's the big deal?"
So we just have to be careful not to jump to conclusions because of all the shit we have to wade through to get to the meat of the original work. Compartmentalize the fantards where they belong, and try to dissect the work on it's own merit. Rinse and repeat.

His inking was pretty awesome in his older comics, and I really like that he kind of ridicules goths even though they think he's the shit. He is very overrated, his fanbase is a goddamn headache, and his dumb sense of humor ruined everything ever.
Also shutup your art is some of my favorite on FA >:(

His inking was very good in his older stuff. I loved how it would look dirty but you still knew what was going on.
I actually hate how he treats his fans. Sure, they are beyond retardly obsessed, crazy, sick MFers (he claimed someone sent him a dead squirrel in the mail because he "thought he'll like it." ) but without them, he would be nothing. Period. They make him god in everyone's eyes and he doesn't even have to try. If it wasn't for them, he wouldn't have been picked to do Zim. If it wasn't for them, he would be getting any money for Johnny. If it wasn't for them, he won't have been commissioned to do art for MSI's newest album. The fans is what makes him great. He needs to grow a personality and try to learn how to be a nice person. Sure, you can be two different people online and IRL (I am really a nice person IRL...I SWEAR!) but its said his rudeness toward his fans rivals Bloch, Zer, and Cara Mitten. I wish people would see he is so full of himself, he made himself a cum enema.
And YOU shut up! Your stuff is better!

>>I feel like an outsider in this issue but I do feel Vasquez 's art is very over rated
I'd have to agree.
When the first issue of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac appeared, I liked the concept and the sick humour... but they paled quickly within a few issues, because the art never showed any sign of technical improvement or of greater assurance; if anything, it became even more sloppy and rushed over time. What a waste of potential!
>>I know I'm a hypocrite because my art isn't appealing or original
Bullshit, pure and simple.
Your technique has improved over the past year; you have a ways to go, but you're going, you're on your way. Artists who continue to learn and grow have no reason to apologize.
>>I don't need to be a master artist to know something is crap.
Or to know that something represents a dead end from which nothing of value can be learned.
I offered some advice to Voln; I'll offer it to you, as well:
-- Continue to observe the world and people around you.
-- Continue to draw, and to experiment with new techniques, new topics.
-- Consider the points offered by any number of books on formal technique, anatomy, perspective, and so on.
-- Pay close attention to the great artists and illustrators of the past, because they can show you the power of certain techniques, the clarity of their observations... and because they can liberate you from the clichés and dead-ends of contemporary art. (Walt Kelly would agree!)
Damned good advice. :)

I liked JV when I was younger and all ~LOL ZIM~ but nowadays, yeah, it feels kinda trite and forced. I appreciate his style, and I don't know whether to be pissed off by his attitude or give him props for being a real life troll (I swear half of his shit is him going 'How stupid and bad can I make this?' and still raking in the bux from all the teenage fangirls.)
Yes, He is a very good troll. But according to his friends and people who know him, that IS his personality so his trolling makes him look more like a douchebag. I think everyone liked him when they were younger. I remember back when Zim was first being promoted on Nick. They were so cryptic. They never really told us what it was about. The commercials just had a computerized screen with a strange language and English claiming a show called Invader Zim was coming. When is first aired, people didn't know what to expect. They marketed the show well because everyone was basically "OHHHH!" with the art and the animation (you have to admit, it was good). But some of us loose some of our rose tinted glasses when we get older. The internet and its rule 34 helps kill your love(like the Lion King and Starfox for me) for a lot of things but when you learn new things, you start to look at things differently. I look at other artists and see awesome stuff and then I look at Jhonen and see no change....and then I look at other cartoons and fall in love with there characters and I look at Zim and find Gir as being annoying when I use to love him. Life makes you change your mind and I know my mind would be changed many times before i die (unless I die tomorrow).
Yes... another comment from me who has been roving around through your gallery.
Personally, I think Jhonen Vasquez's style is pretty good in its form. I actually have gotten really sick of seeing it though, with all of the fanfags who copy it over and over again. Admittedly, I incorporated some of the elements into my own cartooning style, because there are some good parts to his style. That being said, I am very much influenced by other artists too. (Lol... blatant attempt of me not trying to sound like a total jackass).
Of course, I think he's a far cry from being a god among cartoonists as many people make him out to be. The only reason why he is toted as being so good is because he's in a niche market who will eat up anything he puts out there. There are a helluva lot of cartoonists who are far better than he is. Given the choice between an original of an Antonio Prohias Spy vs. Spy cartoon or a Jhonen Vasquez, hell... give me the Prohias any day.
I think you're dead-on about the point you made earlier about how he treats his fans. Sure... I can imagine some fans would be annoying, but there is a little something called "don't bit the hand that feeds you" (or don't be an ungrateful dick).
