You know? I believe if I ever visit a cave with marked formations, I'll take a close look at the floor. If I recall correctly, it takes hundreds of thousands of years for the more spectacular Stalagmites and Stalactites to form. Did you know some clever fellow made Mammoth Caves a musical instrument?
The creator of the "Cave Organ" first tapped on each formation with a hammer to figure out it's note and tone, then rigged up the formations with relays that activated small hammers, then wired the whole thing up to a keyboard. I'm not sure as I get conflicting reports of the year, from the 1930s through to the 1960s, for when this publicity stunt was performed, but I'm certain it was done before the caves were declared a national monument. I believe it was called "The Mammoth Caves Organ" and I believe the instrument was featured in one of those Disney "True life adventures." I recall the sound being rather crystalline, and almost bell like. Of course the instrument had to be dismantled because the vibrations started breaking the calcite deposits and some fell to the floor with a loud, crystalline "Crash" during a performance.
