When done this will be the largest sculpture in the world. But that's going to be a lifetime away yet. They are working on his hand right now, where that red piece of equipment is. His arm stretches out and he points his finger. You can see the white outline below that of the horses head...or part of it anyway. I took a bus ride to the foot of the mountain and around the back part way where you can see the markings for his fingers where they will be grasping the horses mane . It's an amazing undertaking!!

BTW this is all being done privately. No financial help other than donations, and they have 16 full time people working at the carving right now.

Man, and here you thought Mount Rushmore was a hell of a carving. This is just plain awesome, and I have to say that carvings like this are a hell of a lot better than blasting hills and mountains in half to run a highway through 'em! I would so love to be able to be around when this is finished.
Sadly, I'm quite sure I won't be, but I may be able to see it a lot closer. The bus driver who took us up to the mountain said in 17 years they expect to have his arm, hand and the horses head in pretty good shape so it will be looking WAY more impressive than it does now. But finishing it? No one will even take a guess. The driver said that when Polish sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski started work on Crazy Horse in 1948 he estimated it would take 100 years to finish, but it looks like it will take longer. At least they have invested money to make sure there will always be funds to carry on the work. And the family is totally into it. There are children and even 2 grandchildren now working at the mountain!
I have to admit, I'm jealous of your being able to travel like that. We just don't have the money or wherewithal. If you had any designs to head east to the Midwest, I'd advise against it unless you plan to visit specific cities and/or endless farm fields of corn and soybeans are your thing...
Pft... Like we're gonna retire. There ain't gonna be any retirement for us. Our retirement plan is to instill in our kid(s) the importance of taking care of mommy and daddy when they get too old and feeble to work. Plan B is to suffer a massive heart attack or stroke and die before they get us to a hospital. You may think I'm kidding, but I assure you, retirement isn't gonna happen for us...or for virtually all the rest of my friends my age (not to mention younger Y-ers and millennials). Such what happens when you have the insane income inequality like you have now in this country.
Well, I was trying to look on the bright side. But if you want truth.
There's always plan C...which is total collapse of civilization where everyone ends up scavenging a living out of the shambles left after WW3. (assuming there IS anything left) Or plan D where no one needs to worry cause some totally unforseen (or totally forseen, for that matter) ecological disaster wipes us out anytime from the next 5 years to the next 50. (which is high on my list of probabilities) Or...well or lots of other plans, all ranging from bad to ridiculously terrible. But the truth is no one is gonna fix the inequality and what we got is what we have to work with. The only one thing I know for sure is the future is always going to be different than what you think. And,me being a pessimist about most things like this, I think it'll probably be WORSE than you think.
PS it ain't only in this country, pal.....it's global. We're all puppets.
