Because, sometimes, NPCs need some love, too.
A scene from my D&D campaign. Tirandra is a world of horror, darkness, and despair. Still, every dark world needs points of light to give a glimmer of hope and make the world still worth saving. The players latched onto these odd-couple traveling merchants when they offered a camp, food, and some amusing banter in the midst of uncertain, frightening events.
This is the ever-dour and sarcastic Jobasha, the endlessly optimistic Skah, and their newly adopted daughter, Kechara, who the PCs rescued from a pile of bodies following the Massacre of Westreach. After the merchants traveled with the PCs for several weeks, they finally earned enough money to buy their very first shop. Having now parted ways with the party, they begin their long, dangerous trek south towards their new home. A place where, hopefully, they'll never have to deal with another bandit, goblin ambush, or swarm of mind-linked gigantic insects ever again.
